I must admit that being a researcher who has done all of his research in New England, New York has always made me nervous. For one, the whole city/town/village thing is a challenge. I spent today in search of four death certificates. One was reportedly to be found in Harrison and the other three in Scarsdale. I arrived in Harrison armed with my grandmother's statement that her mother, while buried in Greenwich, CT, had died in Harrison while residing in a nursing home. Now, I know we are great at complaining about Town Clerks, but let me just say, that the people in Harrison went WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND in helping me today. Perhaps I got them on a good day, but they, first gave me an education on where death records end up. Apparently, depending on whether someone died at home, on the street, in a nursing home, transferred to a hospital before death, the event could be recorded in one of several different locales. After discovering that this was not going to be simple, the clerks in Harrison ended up calling five other "jurisdictions", where, in each case, the clerk in that locale checked for my great-grandmother's death. After a quick phone call on my part to my mother to confirm the nursing home: the Osburn, literally around the corner from the Harrison Municipal Building, we find that the death is recorded in the "City" of Rye, not the village or town of Rye. So, thanks to the enormous efforts and education from the clerks in Harrison, and a quick drive over to Rye, I had success in a single morning now holding, my great-grandmother, May Harper Ford's death certificate.... Next, I was off to Scarsdale in search of my great-great-grandparents death certificates, and my 3G-grandmother. They were from the years 1895 (Lorena Lindsley (VanCourt) Harper), 1900 (Eliza Ann (Lowry) Harper) and 1917 (Joseph Alexander Harper). Again, the people in Scarsdale could not have been nicer, but, this time I had less success. It turns out that Scarsdale no longer has (or perhaps never had) marriage and death records from 1880 through 1909. They have birth records for the span of time. So I was only able to find the death certificate of my great-great-grandfather, Joseph Alexander Harper, but not his wife Lorena nor his mother Eliza. I did find and view cemetery records maintained at the Reformed Church in Cortlandtown (which pointed me to Scarsdale, as location of death), but there were no "referral" death certificates located in the Town of Cortlandt (I had checked there yesterday). So, one point of this note is to post a thank you to the clerks that I met this day. The second point is to see if anyone has any advice on my stumbling in Scarsdale.... Does anyone know about this date range appearing in state records perhaps? Did some other jurisdiction walk off with the book from Scarsdale? Was there some "disaster" in Scarsdale that destroyed these records? Curiosity is getting to me this evening.... Hi Robert, I am glad to hear that you had good experiences. I always have had helpful clerks. But most important, you said so. Too often we are anxious to tell our hprror stories and not our good stories. I am guilty of the same thing, except that I have had few bad experiences, so generally say nothing. In the future I will try to give appropriate creidt to all those helpful clerks, librarians, and people in general. BarbaraA Barbara L. de Mare, Esq. Hi All, I clicked into the free 1880 census index. http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=6742&offerid=0%3a679%3a0 When I clicked on the census, they asked if I want Ancestry free for 3 days - the best part was "No Credit Card Needed". So I said yes & put in my old user name & etc. You can make a new one if you are new to Ancestry. WA-LA I have full Ancestry free for 3 days now.. Try it (you'll like it - ha) June :-)
Hi, All, Ancestry.com - military collection is "Free" til D-Day (June 6th). Thought you might be interested in this. June :-)

I have Ancestry.com but cannot locate either family in the 1930 census, yet I know both were married and had children. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi List, I have found and sent to Denise off-list, information on US Census data for Mathew's family/line from 1880 thru 1930. Also, his WWI draft registration, and his and Mary's SS Death Index data. Regarding the Emersons, I have sent SS Death Index data for Margaret W Emerson and her son Bertram. I found that Bertram was an alum of Virginia Tech and lived and died in California. Also, I found what appears to be a living spouse, who appears to be living with an older brother of Bertram, all needing verification of course. However, there is a current address and telephone number available which I have forwarded to Denise. I could not find anything on Harold with the possible exception of one Harold Emerson boarding in Syracuse in 1930. More information on his parents and/or siblings might help. I can forward any images/data to anyone else who is trying to help Denise. Hope this helps, Don Angevine Bethel, Maine, USA
Hi Denise, This Kathryn would be the daughter of your Henry's brother George . . . I found them quickly in the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses, although beware in 1900 the census taker put Katie's age down as 78 not 7. Go figure. I would like to get a couple of census look ups for my Weiderhold family. I have Ancestry.com but cannot locate either family in the 1930 census, yet I know both were married and had children. Matthew Weiderhold b.1895 and wife Mary. I think there were two maybe three children. There was a son, a daughter Helen babout 1927, and possibly Murial although she may have been born post 1930. Murial is still alive, but too ill to help me. Matthew was an employee of Borden's milk as a delivery man.I know at one point they lived in Dobbs Ferry and I think they never moved from there. Margaret Weiderhold b about 1901 and husband Harold Emerson had possibly son and daughter Bertram and Patricia althogh I am unsure if both were born by 1930. I am unsure his occupation or where they lived although Pat eventually moved to Syracuse where she died. I would appreciate any help, I am at the end of my rope as I know both had children and had to live somewhere. Denise
Are there any online resources where I could do a lookup on the name Sabol/Szabol that may have immigrated to New York (maybe New Jersey) in the year 1885? I checked castlegarden.org, but it seems that site is still in its infancy. --------------------------------- Need a vacation? Get great deals to amazing places on Yahoo! Travel.
Would there be a passenger list database somewhere of those who were in NY but later left to go back to their old country? I have an ancestor which appears as if he arrived in NY about 1885/86, probably stayed until about 1893 based on children's birth places on passenger lists & census records, then went back to Slovakia and then came back sometime around 1901/1902. I'm trying to fill in some gaps as to when he left the U.S. Not sure if he applied for citizenship during his first time here or his 2nd. Drivations in spelling are compounding the problem of accurately locating the family name in immigration and census records. --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? On maps it is Pollopel Island: 6 3/4 acres of mostly rock; 1,000 feet from the eastern shore of the Hudson just north of Cold Spring; 50 miles north of New York City. During the Revolutionary War, patriots unsuccessfully tried to stop the British from advancing north of the island by sinking 106 upright logs tipped in iron points in the Hudson. Later, General George Washington approved plans to use the island as a military prison. The castle's builder, Frank Bannerman VI, was a Scottish patriot, very proud of his descent from one of the few MacDonald's to survive the massacre at Glencoe in 1692. Acting on behalf of the Crown, a rival clan, the Campbells, slaughtered all MacDonald males ages 12-70. One escaped to the hills with the clan banner -- and from that day on, his family name was Bannerman. The Bannerman family immigrated to the United States in 1854, when Frank was three, and settled in Brooklyn. At the close of the Civil War, the U.S. government auctioned off military goods by the ton, mostly to be scrapped for their metal. Young Frank was one of the first to realize that much of what was being sold had a market value higher than scrap. Under his guidance, Bannerman's became the world's largest buyer of surplus military equipment. When they outgrew their store at 501 Broadway in NYC, they looked around for a larger and safer location in which to store their ammunition. Pollopel Island was selected. Frank Bannerman personally designed the island's buildings, docks, turrets, garden walls and moat in the style of old Scottish castles. Almost all of it was done without professional help from architects, engineers and contractors. And all of it was elaborately decorated, from biblical quotations cast into all fireplace mantles, to a shield between the towers with a coat of arms, and a wreath of thistle leaves and flowers. The castle was constructed between 1901 and 1918. It was primarily an ammunitions storage site but the Bannermans summered there too. The list will not take photos...so here is my email without the photo attached. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I can send it to your personal email. Deb I took a picture, back in 1966-67, of the abandoned fields and farms of Lincoln Ave, Purchase, NY...on the part of the road after you cross Anderson Hill Rd. This road was later diverted and the area became the State Univ. of NY in Purchase. Back then it was just fields, and a polo club where there are now corp. headquarters...Pepsico I think, with a scuplture garden? Anderson Hill Rd goes out to King St. which wanders in and out of CT, on it's way up to Armonk. I have found some folks who are interested in this photo. Maybe someone else would like to see it? I scanned the fading photo into my computer. When I took it years ago, a policeman asked if he could be sent a copy. I never sent it of course, and the photo has been sitting in a glass and frame, for 40 years! It's a photo of a brown fence, looking into an overgrown field, with a no trespassing sign on the fence. That area is now SUNY buildings. I don't know if I can attach it to this list. Depending on how long ago you made your initial request, the TOWN clerk may not have had access to the VILLAGE clerk's records. The two positions were combined here in Ossining within the past few years, although I do not recall exactly when. Thanks, Deb. Yes, Mary Ann is the person I dealt with before......it was a couple of years ago if memory serves me right. Dad used to mention the docotr's name too, I think it was Coburn or Colburn and this doctor would surely have reported the birth if he was a efficient as Dad always said. Ossining has a combined office of Village and Town Clerk. The current clerk is Mary Ann Roberts. Website information can be found here: http://www.villageofossining.org/Cit-e-Access/webpage.cfm?TID=24&TPID=3484 If this is who you dealt with previously, and I'm assuming it is, you may need to check with her to see if she's already checked the village records as well as the town records. quillpen1 wrote: > Thanks so much, Jean Ann. > > I never thought to check with the Village, and the Town Clerk didn't tell > me......probably because she didn't know either. Thanks so much, Jean Ann. I never thought to check with the Village, and the Town Clerk didn't tell me......probably because she didn't know either. She was certainly helpful otherwise. I assume that Dad was born at home because I remember him talking about being so small because of prematuriy that he was put in a box on the open oven door.....wood stove in those days. I'll email the Village if I can find a website.
