He was born on August 15, 1820 in the village of Struth, emigrated in 1848 to America and died in April 11, 1867 in Hastings-on-Hudson.The family were devout Roman Catholics. I have written to the Archdiocese of NY in Yonkers to ask about his final resting place a long time ago but sadly never got a reply. I would be grateful for any assistance with my research. Author: Louisa1860 Surnames: Schmerbach Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.westchester/7216/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for information about my German g g grandfather Joseph Schmerbach who emigrated from Hamburg to New York in 1848 and settled with his wife Margaretha (Margret)about 1860 at 2, Washington Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson NY. I believe that he was involved in the beer/brewery industry as his name appeared in the US IRS Tax Assessment List between 1862-1866 as Joseph Schmerbach retail Liquor Dealer. In 1870, the US Census has the Schmerbach household consisting of Margret, age 42, boarding house keeper; Joseph, age 18, with occupation of carpenter; John, age 14; Louisa, age 10; August, age 8, plus the names of 10 lodgers, 6 of them working in the nearby sugar refinery of Kattenhorn and Hopke. The value of the real estate was listed as $6000. Margret sold her house to a Thomas Maher from Hastings in 1881. The Schmerbachs were devout Catholics. If anyone has any comments, inquiries or information to share with me I would be very grateful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Have you checked the Find A Grave web site? 1. [NYWESTCH] death of MARY E STEWART of New Rochelle
    2. harvieandliz
    3. hi folks, am wondering how to find a death for MARY ELIZABETH STEWART who lived in New Rochelle in 1946; she was born in 1883 in Dublin, Ireland of Scottish parents [Thomas and Mary Stewart]. is it possible to find either an obituary or a gravestone for this lady? I would appreciate helpful tips on searching for this information. Mary E [Bessie] Stewart emigrated from Scotland in 1908; first living at Ann Arbor MI for 1910; I am uncertain where she was in 1920/1930 but have information that she lived in New Rochelle, NY in 1946. Thus, in 1946 she was unmarried and of age 63; she might have died anytime since then. thanks and looking forward to your help, Liz of BC Canada

Washington Avenue, especially lower (2-27), was full of bars as it was the main thoroughfare to get to and from the factories. The Catholic Church in town is St. Matthew's, although that was not established as a parish until ~1914. I do not know when it was established as a mission, but it might have been around in the 1870s. Good luck! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My uncle, Tom O'Keefe (He lived at 4 Labelle Road), used to take me to the basement of the firehouse to watch the firemen bowling, and we used to play catch in the lot where the supermarket is now.
