FAMILIES OF THE COLONIAL TOWN OF PHILLIPSBURG, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK, compiled by Greenville Mackenzie, 1966. Original manuscript is at the Westchester County Historical Society, 2199 Saw Mill River Road Elmsford, New York 10523; the web site for the WCHS is http://www.westchesterhistory.com/. The complete undocumented book is 806 pages and has over 200 families mentioned. The Griffin section comprises 7 pages and 181 Griffin names. In addition many spouses are named. The manuscript, although apparently unpublished has had wide distribution. Edward b.1602 is the first generation of 6 to be explained. About 37 males descendants have brief explanations (mostly people born before 1800). It is not owned by the Mormon Family History Library in Salt Lake. call # GD 100 for WCH Society M ________________________________ From: Donna K. I looked at the Manhattan City directories around that year, Joseph Schmerbach appears only in the 1856 directory as a proprietor of a "Porter House", 66 Beekman. Corrections to these city directories usually began sometime in the year before the year of publication, so, he was probably added to the directory before the career altering incident. Hi: I found a gravestone picture of Anna A. FOSHAY buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The dates are b: 30 Oct 1851, d: 31 May 1878. The plot owner was Henry B Dawson. I have 27 Anna FOSHAY's in my data base, none of which match those dates. I don't have any DAWSON's in my data base. Could someone help me out with this problem? I do have a number of relatives buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. FOSHAY may be her maiden name or her maiden name might be DAWSON. Bill Forshay - San Antonio, TX

I am wondering now if this horrific assault was the reason why he may have wished to remain "anonymous" as his family does not appear in any Census, only the name of his widow appeared in the 1870 Census. The article doesn't give a clue about the month or the year, Joseph jun was born in March 16, 1856, I wonder if "Dad" was in prison then? Is there an archive in NY that I can contact to find out more about the trial against Joseph Schmerbach? I would be very grateful if you could email me the article. These families are all related and descend from Jakob Gorlej and Anna Nemetti. Their chldren were Anna (1877-1951) married to Joseph Ference; Josef (1881-1971)married to Catherine Maciaga; Catherine (1884-1973) married to Joseph Cwik; Mary (1885-1937) married to Andrew Ferenz; Jan (John) -- he remained in Poland; and Peter (1892-1960). Jakob and Anna Gorley and their children were from the town of Grabiny, Straszecin Parish, Poland. Originally the town was in Galicia, Austria-Hungary, but now lies within Poland. Their children except for Jan emigrated to the U.S. around the turn of the century. Most went to Greenwich, CT first and then eventually made their way to Port Chester, NY. Only one - Joseph - moved from CT and came to NJ. Anna, Catherine, Mary and Peter are all buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Chester, NY. I recently made contact with a descendant of the Cwik family and would really like to make contact with relatives of the other families as well in order to complete my research and fill in any gaps. Once finished, I would be more than happy to share the info I have. Thanks. Mark Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. St. Mary's obviously is Catholic; Oakland is non-sectarian. I believe you had to be a parishioner of a Yonkers church to purchase a plot at St. Mary's. If he doesn't turn up in either of those cemeteries, I would suggest trying Calvary in Queens. Even today, many Catholics from this area are buried there due to family connections. The two closest cemeteries open at that time were St. Mary's and Oakland, both in Yonkers.
