    2. "The Northern Post" was the only newspaper listed in NewsBank as being published in Washington County, NY during the war of 1812.  It was published in Salem.   When I ran Porter Hanks' name through the NewsBank search engine, I did not find items mentioning his name in "The Northern Post".  I e-mailed you the articles mentioning Porter Hanks, which I did find.  A more extensive search might produce results tying Porter Hanks to Washington County, NY.  However, I am sorry, but I do not have sufficient time for that kind of research.   ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Shannon" <bshannon@insight.rr.com> To: nywashin@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 3:08:41 PM (GMT-0500) Auto-Detected Subject: [NYWASHIN] Look up at Godfrey Memorial Library Please Would SKS with access to the Godfrey Memorial Library newspaper collection do a lookup for me, please?  I'm trying to find proof that Lt. Porter HANKS came from Washington County. He was the commander of the remote outpost of Fort Mackinac which he capitulated to the British at onset of the War of 1812.  Hanks had not been notified by his superiors that war had been declared.  When the British and Indians landed on the island and surrounded the fort during the night he was caught completely unaware. Hoping to be absolved of any wrongdoing, he then went to Fort Detroit where he requested a court martial from General Hull.  During the court martial proceedings Fort Detroit was attacked by the British and Hanks died when struck and cut in half by a British cannonball. I'm hoping that a Washington County newspaper at the time may have ran the story and reported Hanks' connection to Washington County.
