Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. July 17, 1925. TWO QUARRYMEN DIE ANOTHER HURT IN WEBSTERVILLE PIT. Early on Tuesday morning Walter Geake, aged 59, and Peter Murphy, aged 61, both of Websterville were killed while at work at the Barre Granite Quarrying company in Websterville, near Barre, when they were struck by a falling ledge of rock. According to statements made by the company who made investigation almost immediately after the accident, no one could be responsible for the mishap. A large section of the ledge which had been loosened just before workmen descended into quarry hole, and began work with a drill, and without warning a part of the ledge split and slid into the deep hole, pieces of which struck the men. The body of Geake was badly crushed and he died almost instantly. Murphy was alive when workmen reached his side and a doctor and ambulance was summoned. He died on the way to the hospital. Andrew Miles of Graniteville, who was injured, was taken to the hospital where his condition was not serious. All three men were expert quarry operators, and were familiar with the dangers lurking constantly in the deep holes from falling chips. Geake is survived by a wife and three daughters, together with a number of brothers and sisters, while Murphy is survived by four daughter and two sons. Transcribed by, Joan H.
