I'm not sure exactly when we started using DOLLARS - another good question to look up!! I put the $168.64 in another calculator and that would be the equivalent of $3900.00 today - the land in question was only One Acre but contained a Grist Mill - pretty slim by today's standards for property, don't you think? Was it immediately after the end of the Rev. War? Or after the constitution was ratified? I have an inflation calculator that starts at 1800. Ok. The £14 as I stated should have said $14 and the $168.64 was the inflated value as of 2007. So, I think for accuracy, we would need to know how one £ compared to the value of the first American dollar. I'm thinking that sterling was worth more than a single dollar, but I could certainly be wrong. I know that we had "continental" dollars during the Rev. War which became quite worthless (as in "ain't worth a Continental") but when were they replaced by US dollars? Seems like also you'd want to look in to the economic times, both nationally and locally, to see if there were instances of people in financial need selling due to a desperate economic times. -----Original Message----- From: nywashin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nywashin-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of NancyOA@aol.com Sent: Friday, July 04, 2008 6:35 AM To: nywashin@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYWASHIN] 14 lbs 1780?
