On October 10, 1780 a force of about 600 British soldiers and 300 Indians, commanded by Major Christopher Carleton, captured Fort Ann, NY. The soldiers in this garrison, commanded by Captain Adial Sherwood, numbered sixty to seventy militiamen. The captured patriots were taken to Canada and held as prisoners of war until May 1782. The Lieutenants were Cornelius Baldwin and Ezekiel Roberts. Some of the soldiers identified through their Revolutionary War pension application records are: Robert Hopkins, Samuel Brown, Ephraim Thomas, Benjamin Wing, Daniel Wing and Cornelius Van Tassel. Through specific family history pages viewed on Web sites, Elisha Fitch and Henry Van Woert have been identified as probable comrades. While the capture of Fort Ann in 1780 was not as significant in the Revolutionary War as many other events, it was significant to those patriots and their descendants. Perhaps you are a descendant of one of these patriots. Or, perhaps you know the names of others captured at Fort Ann on October 10, 1780? If you have a pension application, or other documentation, for a patriot who served with Captain Adial Sherwood at Fort Ann and is not identified above, please let me know. I want to write a short piece about the capture of Fort Ann and the imprisonment of these men by the British. I'm also interested in placing this event in historical context so supplementary sources would be helpful. Thank you very much. Richard
