I have just uploaded Item 6 of the LDS film #1304663 which is titled Alien Declarations. I have transcribed this item, like the first 5 items for the Irish born only. Besides Rensselaer county, there are many from Albany, Saratoga and Washington Counties. Most give the county in Ireland of birth and many even give the townland. While these can be valuable to your research when trying to find the county in Ireland where your ancestor was born, I would like to relate a personal problem I had with an alien declaration of my gggrandfather, Timothy O'Connor. I found Timothy's naturalization papers way back in the early 1990s on one of my first genealogy trips back to Troy. I was a bit surprised, however, when they stated he was born in County Limerick because my babybook had him born in County Tipperary. Well, after about five or so years of more research, I located a Timothy O'Connor in Cappamore, County Limerick. I also found in the tithes (generation before Timothy) a Bryan O'Connor which was Timothy's father's name (from his death certificate). However, I was never able to find his son, James' death cert in Troy or his baptism record in Ireland. Well, to make a very long story shorter, I found my ggrandfather's death cert and his obituary in early 2003. Both listed County Tipperary as his birth county, plus his sister's name. About a year ago, I obtained her death cert from Albany and it gave her birthday and that she was born in County Tipperary. I then had research done in Tipperary and while they still couldn't find my James' baptism, they found his sister's in Tipperary Parish, in County Tipperary! So, why did Timothy's naturalization papers say Limerick? Well a few months ago I found the his passenger records for the port and year in the naturalization papers and the ship the family came over on was "City of Limerick", so now I believe that there was a communication problem going on between the county clerk and Timothy when he filed his papers. I should mention, however, that while I have not been able to find Timothy's baptism record, both his daughter and his son had he was born in County Tipperary on their death certs. His had he was born in Ireland. You can find the naturalization records on the Rensselaer County website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrenss2/ Or on the Troy section of my website, the url is under my name. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by ZoneAlarm AntiVirus
