Vaughn former sheriff of Washington County died at 3:00 pm yesterday in Glens Falls Hospital at the age of 85. He retired from public office in 1943 after serving 42 years in county, town, and willage positions. A veteran Republican, Mr. Vaughn served the Town of Fort Edward as supervisor from 1916 to 1934 following which he was sheriff of the county for three years. He was elected mayor of the Village of Fort Edward in 1937 serving until his retirement in 1943. Previous to that his political career had included being a member of the Town Board of Kingsbury for four years, a village trustee of Fort Edward for eight years, a member of the local town board for three years and overseer of the poor for two years. Mr. Vaughn was born in Kingsbury June 15, 1865. He spent most of his life in this village where he operated a farm implement store at 73 Brodway. The business had been started by his father and uncle from whom the name "Vaughn Brothers" by which the firm was known originated. On Feb 6 of this year, Mr. Vaughn fell on the ice while crossing the yard from his home to the store and fractured his hip. About a month ago complications set in which required his hospitalization again. He was a director of the Fort Edward National Bank, a 50-year member of Fort Edward Lodge 267 F. and A. M.; a member of Jane McCrea Lodge 267, IOOF, and belonged to the Methodist Church. He is survived by one son, Clifford J. Vaughn, who resides at the family home; two granddaughters, Mrs. Donald Evans of Fort Edward and Mrs. John Shannon of Granville; two great-grandchildren, Stanley and Betsy Shannon; and one sister, Mrs. William Rivers of Hudson Falls. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 P.M. Interment will be in Moss Street Cemetery, Hudson Falls.
