Bob Farrell, Jim Tyler I recently learned that there was a large portrait of Lieutenant and then Captain Hiram Otis Warren ( 123rd Regiment, Company K) on the wall of his descendants home in Hampton, NY. The contents of this house were auctioned off , perhaps in the 1950's. I am curious as to where it ended up. Is there any data base which would have such information on it ? There is a Mr. Robinson who purchased a picture a few years ago and we were in contact. I am now wondering if it is the same portrait. Hi Bob, What town or village would the cemetery be in? Good to know you are still on line. I had what I thought was a brainstorm recently. With the 150th anniversary of the 123rd in 2012 I am going to suggest to the organizers of the annual July 4th parade in Salem (my home town) that they form a section for descendants, direct or otherwise, to march as a group in honor of the regiment. I hope they agree. I have two great uncles and one cousin that were of the 123rd. Can anyone identify this cemetery from the following description ?? I can give you directions to the cemetery. It is at the fork where Quaker St. and Rt. 22. When we found it, we parked next door in a Veterinary office lot w/ a pea-stone gravel driveway. The stone had been broken in half and knocked over. The cemetery was covered with overgrowth. Most of the stones had been overturned and strewn about the lot. My GETTY family were Ulster Scots who lived in Ballibay, County Monaghan, Ireland with Dr. CLARK in 1764. They were Presbyterians. However, they changed to Methodists some time after that. They came over from Newry, County Down, Ireland on the ship, "JOHN". I don't have the ships list accessible at the moment. Hope this gives you some clues.... Donna Source: "Genealogical Notes of the GETTY and LYTLE Families of Salem, New York", Page 31 - In 1764 they came to America, in the colony of Dr. Clark, and sailed from Newry, County Down, on board a brig, which carried nearly three hundred souls, and which, after a passage of about twelve weeks, landed passengers at New York, July 28th, 1764.
Hi Donna, My Loudon family came from Londonderry about 1800. They are also connected to the McIntyre/McIntire families - some moved on to Salem, Washington County, Indiana in the 1830s. Did any of your Lytle family marry into the McIntyre, Faris or Loudon families? We have the Lytle name in Loudon / Louden our tree - as an extended line. Thanks so much! We suspect our COOPER ancestors came to Washington County from Ireland circa in the late 1700s. We believe they came from one of the northern counties but are having some difficulty in documenting just where since Ireland had not been split then. Our COOPERS have been Methodists for years so we think they may have come over with another group of Methodist believers from Ireland. We have yet to document just how they arrived. I also have BROWN ancestors who came from Ireland in the 1850s. They went to Delaware County, settling in Colchester area. --- On Wed, 6/18/08, nywashin-request@rootsweb.com <nywashin-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: From: nywashin-request@rootsweb.com <nywashin-request@rootsweb.com> Subject: NYWASHIN Digest, Vol 3, Issue 86 To: nywashin@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 12:00 AM Today's Topics: 1. If you're talking about the Famine immigrants in Washington County beginning in 1850 and even later immigrants, 1860s for example, many of them came in through Canada. It was cheaper to go to Canada from England (where most of the transatlantic ships sailed from) or Dublin and Canada was part of the British Empire which the US wasn't. Regulations about ships in Canada were more lax than in the US and the "coffin ships" could get into Canada easier than NY or Boston. Canada didn't have any laws about ships keeping passenger records until later in the nineteenth century so the records are scarce. The Canadian Archives are generally where your have to search for them. Many of the immigrants came in through Grosse Ile where thousands died after the coffin ships docked. There's a database with surviving records in it: http://collectionscanada.ca/databases/grosse-ile-immigration/index-e.html History of Irish immigrants to Grosse Ile: http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/qc/grosseile/index_E.asp Many of them went down from Montreal over Lake Champlain to Washington County. There was a very good online map showing the route they took. I'll look for it. It may have been removed. George The Granville Sentinel is on microfilm in the Pember Library in Granville. I am now in the Granville area and reading Granville Sentinels several times a week while I am here. I will take a look tomorrow when I am there and see if there is any mention of him. It might be only a small blurb in the Poultney section of the paper. That is where most deaths are reported unless the person is a well known figure in the area. Individual obituaries a not the norm in this paper at this time in history. If I find anything I will copy it with my digital camera and can then send it along as a JPEG file when I am next in a library accessing my e-mail. The direct approach would be: for the Granville area, you'll need a lookup in the Glens Falls Post Star which can be viewed at Crandall Library in Glens Falls. For the Rutland area, you'll need a lookup in the Rutland Herald, which can be viewed at the Rutland Library, Rutland, VT. --- On Tue, 6/10/08, GHGREEN@aol.com <GHGREEN@aol.com> wrote: From: GHGREEN@aol.com <GHGREEN@aol.com> Subject: [NYWASHIN] Inquiry To: NYWASHIN@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, June 10, 2008, 9:42 AM Looking for an area newspaper that might have details on the death of Edward Lewis of Poultney, VT, @ Dec 19, 1930.
