Thanks, Joann, Do you know anything about possible church records for marriages? I know it was a Protestant church, but not which one. Nana ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joann H. Hi, Nana, New York state did not record vital records until after 1880 which makes it difficult researching there. Sometimes I have found that the "off" year NYS censuses will show the county where a person was born. Hello, I am new to this list and would like to know where I might go about finding marriage records for 1831. The person I am interested in is Harriet SCOTT b in NY abt 1807 and married in Sandy Hill, NY in 1831 to Francis NORTON. The Norton family was in Washington County before leaving for Allegany County, NY. I don't know if Harriet was born in Washington County, but she was born in NY and the marriage did take place in W county. If anyone is researching this line or if anyone has any suggestions about the marriage records I would appreciate and help and or suggestions. Thank you, Nana (NAY-na) Rutherford Redell

Heritage Quest has all the censuses searchable online, but not all are indexed. For those not indexed you can use the "browse" function, specify which census year, then state, then county, then location and start browsing actual census pages for the name desired. At a quick look in the 1830 census for Delaware, Kent Co., Murderkill I found a John Warren, Philander Warren, and 2 Samuel Warrens - each on separate census pages. It is easier than scrolling through microfilms, and you can print out selected pages. Ruth
Debby, The censuses on HeritageQuest show nine Warrens in Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., DE in 1810: Benjamin, Fall F.N.*, John, John F.N.*, Loadmon, Rheuben, Richard, Samuel Sr., and Samuel Jr. There were also 21 Warrens in Sussex County (various hundreds). * I don't know what the F.N. means but I saw it after several names, not just Fall and John Warren's. Pehaps some other lister can enlighten us???? In 1820 there were six Warrens in Murderkill: Charles, Fall, Polpy, William, Samuel Sr. and Samuel Jr., and six in Sussex County. The HeritageQuest index only lists one Samuel Warren in Kent Co. but there are two enumerated on the actual census page with no identification as to senior and junior. Bear in mind that Samuel Sr. and Samuel Jr. may or may not have been father and son; they could have been grandfather and grandson, uncle and nephew, or some other relation --- it just means that one was younger than the other. HeritageQuest doesn't have the 1830, 1840, and 1850 censuses yet so I can't help you with those. The 1860 census has a Samuel Warren, age 60, in Camden P.O., Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., DE. (Are you sure Walter died in Camden, NJ?). Also in the household were Sarah Warren, 59; Catherine Cruthers?, 70, and James Cullen, 9. Does your library offer access to HeritageQuest? Ours doesn't so I had to get a library card from the next county over in order to access it. It was definitely worth the effort -- the images are much better than those on Ancestry plus they're free! I only wish they had all the censuses (maybe some day!). Kathy in Virginia
Dick Hillenbrand Dick asked me to write all I could about Walter, so just maybe someone could give me another avenue to search so as to locate Walter's father. Walter was one of three boys, he has a brother Hamilton and Samuel. Walter was born in 1810 in Delaware. He married Margaret Pritchard in Cumberland County, NJ in 1832. Walter and Margaret moved to Murderkill Hundred in Kent County, Delaware. Their first eight children were born there, the next two were born in Potter's Landing, Caroline county, Maryland. I have Walter in these locations ( census) 1850 and 1860 Potter's Landing, Caroline County, Maryland 1870-1880 Philadelphia He died in 1899 in Camden, NJ. I have the newspaper ( copy) of obit. Walter was a * captain* ( sea) mentioned also in obit. His kids were born from 1833 to 1859. On his brothers, a * cousin* found me, that has Hamilton and I have that information, but not a thing on Samuel. I have tried using his brother's names as possible names for their father, but no luck so far. So Dick and all others do you have any other suggestions on how I can find his father? Thanks for this suggestion Dick. hi Annette, I concur with Patti, especially when the Washington County Archivist (Dennis Lowrey) is right downstairs in the same building where the original census records are held, plus they are indexed on his accesible computer system. You'll find plenty of other resorces also right outside the historians office. I will look into whether there is anything on line, geography preculdes me from taking a trip, I am in California--also a set budget, but all of you guys are helpful to a long distance genealogist. Now if I could only find the father of my great great grandfather all would be fine. Debby In a message dated 7/27/2008 12:07:40 P.M. The Wash. Co. Historian's office is only open Tues. and Weds. from 8:30 to 4:30 but the Archives and Land Records are open 5 days a week, also the Wash. Co. Historical Society is open on Fri. If you go to the Wash. Co. website, historian's office you will also find a few records (seven new data bases coming soon) and how to have research done for you if you want. Yup, good thing to know that it's not open on Friday. Thanks for correcting my answer, Loretta--or at least clarifying the information. I wasn't even thinking about the days of the week and what's open when. Patti On Jul 27, 2008, at 12:35 PM, Loretta wrote: > The Wash. Co.
