Dear List, Does anyone know anything about the Daniel Rose, who was a millwright and worked for General Philip Schuyler before moving to the Greenwich area ca. 1771. Daniel Rose's real estate was assessed at $100.00 on the October 23, 1779 Saratoga District Tax List. According to Johnson's History of Washington County, NY, Daniel Rose was originally from Rhode Island. Thank you for your help. Leslie Potter
Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. July 17, 1925. TWO QUARRYMEN DIE ANOTHER HURT IN WEBSTERVILLE PIT. Early on Tuesday morning Walter Geake, aged 59, and Peter Murphy, aged 61, both of Websterville were killed while at work at the Barre Granite Quarrying company in Websterville, near Barre, when they were struck by a falling ledge of rock. According to statements made by the company who made investigation almost immediately after the accident, no one could be responsible for the mishap. A large section of the ledge which had been loosened just before workmen descended into quarry hole, and began work with a drill, and without warning a part of the ledge split and slid into the deep hole, pieces of which struck the men. The body of Geake was badly crushed and he died almost instantly. Murphy was alive when workmen reached his side and a doctor and ambulance was summoned. He died on the way to the hospital. Andrew Miles of Graniteville, who was injured, was taken to the hospital where his condition was not serious. All three men were expert quarry operators, and were familiar with the dangers lurking constantly in the deep holes from falling chips. Geake is survived by a wife and three daughters, together with a number of brothers and sisters, while Murphy is survived by four daughter and two sons. Transcribed by, Joan H. Hi list, The listing for the Wash. Co. Historian that says no emails accepted is an old one. You might want to Google Wash. Co. NY and choose the first website that comes up. There is a list stating what is available for research ,a few data bases and how to apply fo help . I don't mind folks using email for a couple of questions, but, if in depth research is requested, we have a $15.fee. I have some directories, one only for 1926 and then the rest of the collection is in the 40's and up. I'll try to post the ones available next Tues. or Weds. the only days my office is open. Feel free to write if there is anything I can help you with. Hi Patti You might want to contact the Historical Society or write the County Historian. Washington County Historical Society 167 Broadway Fort Edward, NY 12828 I suggest that you write both of them by Snail Mail (most Archives request this rather than Email or telephone call due to the large number of requests) as it states that the County Historian does not accept Email Requests since the following is stated: Researchers can request a “genealogical search” through the mail, but not by e-mail. To order, send a written request detailing what information you are seeking, a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope, and a non-refundable $15.00 check or money order made payable to the “Washington County Treasurer” to: Washington County Historian Washington County Municipal Center, Building A 383 Broadway Fort Edward, New York 12828 Good Luck Pat R
Are there old town/city directories available for Wash County? Looking for the time period 1953 - 1955 - Fort Edward/Glens Falls area. thanks, Patti
With a quick search, I found these in Washington County and close by. There was a David Wakely m. 2/21/1818 to Phebe Hasbrouk, both of Poughkeepsie, in Washing (Dut. Co.); Samuel Thurston, Esq. officiated. There was a Robert Wakely in the 1790 census listed in Hebron, 1-4-2. The actual copy appears a little questionable. Could also be "Walmsly", but the index says "Wakely." In the 1800 census: Robert Wakeley Hebron, Washington, NY (Perhaps the same as above) In the 1810 census: Robert Wakely Hebron, Washington, NY Samuel Wakely Thurman, Washington, NY In the 1820 census: John Wakeley Hebron,Washington,NY John Wakeley White Creek,Washington,NY Joseph Wakeley Hebron,Washington,NY Nathan Wakeley Hebron,Washington,NY In the 1830 census: John Wakely Hebron, Washington, New York Robert Wakely Hebron, Washington, New York In 1840, there were none in Washington County but there was: Joseph Wakley Johnsburgh, Warren, New York In 1850, there were none in Washington County. If your family was here that early, and if you can find a genealogy of that family, you may find mention of one or more who "moved to NY" or some such notation that might help you. One of my families is named Whelpley. They also were in CT in the 1600's and I have seen some instances where the Wakelys and Whelpleys were lumped together in some research and there were even some instances where they considered part of the same family in couple genealogy books. But, I have not found any documents that connect the family members. I got pretty familiar with the Wakely surname because of the similarity of spelling, time frame and location in CT and sorting them all out. Hi Dick, Thank you for the suggestion about the National Rose Family Association. I shall give them a try. Before I wrote my paper entitled "A Lawyer's Analysis of Burgoyne's 'Wilderness': The Saratoga Tax District, Albany County, NY" for the 2006 Conference on New York State History, I went through my data base and counted noses. In the process I created my "Saratoga District Population List" a/k/a "Appendix A". This afternoon I have been involved in a discussion on the Saratoga County e-mail list involving John Freeman and his sister Dorcas Freeman Burley Rose. After finding some additional information in Bob Freeman's book on the Freeman Families of New England, I took the opportunity to revise and update my "Appendix A" and decided to ask for help with my additional questions - hence the posting. The pun was unintended. "Appendix A" ended up being 63 pages long. However, my actual paper was only 8 pages long and took 20 minutes to present. Thanks again, Leslie Dick Hillenbrand wrote: > Rose nose count. Dear List, Daniel Rose lived in Easton and married a Kenyon. I do not know where the other Rose households were located within the Saratoga Tax District of Albany County in 1777. I am trying to locate the residences of these seven nuclear families, which also bear the surname of Rose and were living in the Saratoga Tax District in 1777. Behold my nose count for people living in the Saratoga Tax District in 1777 with the surname of Rose. Can you add any additional information regarding how these Roses are related? Have I missed anyone? Do you have any additional information on their respective birth and/or death dates or places of birth and/or death? I suspect that I have at least seven (7) different nuclear families with the surname of Rose living in the Saratoga District in 1777. Query: are any of these nuclear families members of the same extended family? If there is more than extended family represented by these seven nuclear families, which nuclear family belongs to which extended family? If there is only one extended family, how are the nuclear families connected? Thank you for you help. Leslie
Leslie and all, I just put up a Blog article about the "American Archives" collection of Peter Force, which became the foundation of the collection of the Library of Congress. There is an online full text digital version that I linked to and you can search for many things about the Revolution. I just searched on the words Saratoga and Burgoyne, and got quite a few hits. These are all from transcribed manuscripts and deliciously fun to read. Dick Hillenbrand Upstate New York Genealogy Blog http://ny-genes.blogspot.com On Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 2:22 PM, Leslie B. Hi All; If you see any records of a WAKELEY. WAKELY AND WAKLEY in Washington Co. Dating from the late 17-18 century can you let me know? This family is my great great grandfathers line and my great grandmother was a Wakeley. I find it amazing how many Wakelys are out there. Dee in Houston, Texas
