    1. [NYWASHIN] Roberts-Frederick Marriage
    2. Source, Granville, N.Y. Sentinel--Fri. Jan.23, 1914. MIDDLE GRANVILLE, N.Y. Morris W. Griffith and family of this village are entertaining a bridal couple, the bride being their granddaughter Miss Anna Roberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John I. Roberts of Schenectady, former residents of Granville, who was married Tuesday, January 20, to Raymond Frederick of Mechanicville. The ceremony was performed at noon at the State street Presbyterian church parsonage in her home city, the pastor, Rev. Mr. Murdock, officiating. Miss Elizabeth Roberts and Charles Nutting attended the couple. Following the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the bride's home, after which the couple left for a week's visit in Middle Granville. The bride is an estimable young woman and has a large circle of friends who will wish for her a happy future. They will reside in Mechanicville, where they have a house awaiting them. Mr. Frederick and bride received many handsome gifts. Previous to the marriage, several "showers" and parties were given in Schenectady in honor of the bride-elect. Until a few years ago the lady resided with her grandparents in this village and has a host of friends here. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby Genealogy not just a hobby, but a labor of love.

    1. [NYWASHIN] MORRIS - MACDOUGAL Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Grace MORRIS MACDOUGAL, the Aunt of Rita MORRIS LESSON which was taken at the G. C. Millham Studio in Hoosick Falls, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with Grace appearing to be in her 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate some information regarding Grace's niece as follows: Rita F. MORRIS b. 16 Jul 1909 in Middle Falls, NY to parents Sigismund MORRIS (b. about 1869 in Washington Co. NY) and Ada KING (b. about 1880 in VT). Rita married Francis A. "Fritz" LESSON (b. 5 Nov 1905 in Greenwich, NY) and together they had at least one child. Rita died 14 Mar 1989 in Middle Falls, NY. I am hoping to find someone from this family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. I agree with the person who wrote about the fact that it was possible that Samuel and Elizabeth might have had two sons named Benjamin---the younger Benjamin being given the same name as an older sibling who died in infancy. I have seen that in my own family history. There is another possibility. I do not know your sources for the dates, but if it is source other than a primary source, for instance an old genealogy that has been written by another family historian for instance, they may have picked up on a later Christening date and used that as a dob. People assume sometimes that all babies were baptized almost immediately after birth, but that was not always the case. Sometimes Christenings were put off until a clergyman was available, winter weather abated, etc., and then perhaps two or three children in the family might be baptized at one time. So it is very possible that the dates are for the same child----one being the actual dob, the other being a date for a Christening. I suggest you go back and check your sources again and see if you can find anything that indicates that possibility. 3. Eileen, I feel that is is more accurate to say that there was a small area of land on the east side of the Hudson River, which both New York and Massachusetts both claimed. The Massachusetts claim was based on the fact that some people from Massachusetts had settled the area and they did not recognize New York's jurisdiction over them. The bigger boundary dispute involved the "Hampshire Grants", a/k/a the present day state of Vermont, which New York claimed. Leslie

    3. Just to throw a thought in here, I seem to remember that part of New York at somepoint was part of Mass. way back when.? Is it possible then that one of those listed as Joseph Lambert in Ma. was actually your man and that perhaps the people who did the maps did not take that border dispute into consideration when this was all done?? Just a thought here for further research... Potter <lbpotter@comcast.net> To: nywashin@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, 25 Oct 2008 2:19 pm Subject: Re: [NYWASHIN] Joseph Lambert Ann, I stand corrected. I was quoting a secondary source that dealt with the emigration of the Rev. Thomas Clark's congregation, which apparently was not accurate when it came to Washington County geography. I have found one other glitch in the geographic references in that secondary source, which were easily explained and turned out to be actually logical after doing some rather extensive research into the historic geography. When consulting Covens, Mortimer and Coven, Jr.'s map of townships east of Lake Champlain laid down by New Hampshire and New York, dated 1778, it would appear that White Creek was in the Hoosick Tax District of Albany County and New Perth, a/k/a Salem was located in Charlotte County, which had been created from Albany County in 1772. (Coven, Mortimer and Coven, Jr.'s map is available at the Library of Congress. The Call number written on the manuscript is G3710 1780 C.6. Vault) Joseph Lambert's name does not appear on any of Albany County Tax District Lists that I have for tax act, which was enacted on October 23, 1779. His name is not on the list of Turner Patent residents in 1789 as found on page 123 of Johnson's History of Washington County, NY. According to the 1790 U.S. Census Return available through Heritage Quest On Line, there are five men living in the United States, who bear the name Joseph Lambert and none of those five (5) men live in New York State - let alone Salem, Washington County, NY. (However the two, who live in Massachusetts do live in Salem, Essex County, MA.) In 1800 the U.S. Census Return cites 7 men with the name of Joseph Lambert, but again none of them are living in New York State In 1810 the U.S. Census Return cites 3 men with the name of Joseph Lambert and only one lives in New York State and his is down in Westchester County. In 1820 the U.S. Census Return cites 11 men with the name of Joseph Lambert and three live in New York State. One in Tomkins County and two in Westchester County. Granted the U.S. Census transcriptions available through Heritage Quest are not always completely accurate, but.... So leaving the historic geography issues aside, I do not know what to say to Eileen. 2. Thanks Leslie - ahh - they were in Granville from about 1780 when they purchased land and sold it in 1787. The rest of the data you sent me below I am familiar with - so that would explain why they aren't a tax list for 1779 - they hadn't arrived at their chosen location yet! The Ephraim Spring is the son and brother of the two Nathaniels. In case anyone else reading this is also interested in the SPRING line - this Nathaniel Spring gave land for the cemetery and established the first gristmill in Granville. The gristmill and other land was sold to Gurdon Johnson in 1787. This is a good list - thanks again - Nancy In a message dated 10/25/2008 3:54:44 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, lbpotter@comcast.net writes: Hi Nancy, I am sorry but the only other man with the surname of Spring, besides Ephriam Spring, whom I find in my tax lists is a man named Josiah Spring. Josiah first shows up on the 1887 Ballstown District Tax List and he is there again in 1788. That does not mean that Nathaniel Spring (father and/or son) are not residing in the Hoosick Tax District of Albany County in 1779, just means that they are not paying real estate taxes.
