    1. [NYWASHIN] Benjamin Hayes
    2. Joann H. Nichols
    3. There is a Benjamin Hays in Granville, Washington Co., NY in 1800, in Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY in 1810, in Beekmantown, Clinton Co., NY in 1820, in Bridport, Addison Co., VT in 1830.. In 1840 he is in Ferrisburgh, Addison Co., VT, and in 1850 he is back in Beekmantown. At that time it says he was born in CT about 1776 and is age 74. His wife in 1850 is listed as Sarah Hayes, age 56. She appears to be his second wife, perhaps with the maiden name of Case. Who was Benjamin's first wife, and what are the names of their children? Thanks, Joann Nichols

    3. Thank you all who responded to my query on Squire Morehouse. The information was very helpful. Someone else emailed me privately giving me his dob (12 Aug, 1826) dod (04 June 1893) and that he is buried in N. Hebron Cemetery. Now the only thing missing is date of marriage. Thanks. Eileen

    3. Hi All; Yes, they would refer to him as Squire for he was a land owner. Not a tenet farmer. They used this over in the British Isles as a form of respect. For sometimes the land owner rent out his land to various people to farm and pay him a certain amount in what they grew. I'm hope I'm right here . 2. Dee, One needs to subscribe to the on-line services of the Godfrey Memorial Library.  If you go to the Godfrey Memorial Library's web site, you will be able to look at the services offered at the four different subscription levels. I use my Godfrey Memorial Library subscription practically every day.  I have found it to be an invaluable resource. Leslie

    2. Mike, At my subscription level (blue), The Godfrey Memorial Library offers access to four digital newspaper archives.   The one that I use the most is News Bank.  News Bank offers 157 digital newspaper titles for the state of New York.  These titles were each published for varying periods of time between 1730 and 1860.  Of those 157 titles, News Bank offers 13 titles published in the City of Albany; 8 published in Ballston Spa; 3 published in Salem; 1 published in Saratoga Springs; one published in Troy; and, one published in Schenectady.  For really early newspapers coverage for Washington County, I have usually ended up reading papers published in Albany and New York City. I have never used the other three newspaper archives, so I do not know how extensive those other archives are. Hope that this helps.  Leslie

    2. I use Heritage Quest On-Line, which I get free from my county library system.   (I believe that Ancestry.com also makes Heritage Quest available for its subscribers.)  I also recommend the Godfrey Memorial Library, which has four different subscription plans form which to choose.  The best thing about the Godfrey Memorial Library subscription is that it gives you access to 18th and 19th century newspapers and 19th century county histories, nation wide.  Google Book Search is also a fantastic free resource.  I have also found the Family Message Boards on Genealogy.com to be very helpful and the community of researchers, who subscribes to this e-mail list, is also very knowledgeable and helpful.
