    3. Thanks for this info. This Benjamin may be related, but he's not the one I need. :( The one I need went from Washington Co. to Clinton Co. He had a son Benjamin who ends up out in Warren Co., PA. I appreciate your reply, Joann thmsdunne9@aol.com wrote: > Hi; > > ???? 1. Re: [NYWASHIN] William Dennis and Elizabeth Sherman
    2. Carolyn, I can not give you a marriage date, but I do have some questions.  Some of the data just does not add up. William Dennis served in the 13th Regiment of the Albany County Militia.  Governor Clinton called the 13th Regiment out immediately following the Battle of Freeman's Farm, (i.e., the first installment of the Battle of Saratoga) which was fought on September 19, 1777.  The 13th Regiment fought at the Battle of Bemis Heights (i.e. the second day of the Battle of Saratoga.) on October 7,1777.  William Dennis did not apply for a Rev. War Pension and I have not yet checked Virgil White's Rev. War Service Records for him.  Since he served in the 13th Regiment of the Albany County Militia that means that he was a resident of the Saratoga Tax District some time during the Rev War. William Dennis was the son of a 1779 Saratoga District Tax payer, i.e. his father, Thomas Dennis. Although, I have not yet found Thomas Dennis' lease, based on the common practices among the Saratoga Patent proprietors, I suspect that the Dennis family had been in living in the Saratoga Tax District for more than five years.  The genealogical data that you sent me some years ago indicates that Thomas and Hannah Dennis had four children born in the Saratoga District in 1773, 1775 and 1778.  (you did not give me a date of birth for the fourth child.)  You also said that Patience Dennis was born in Dartmouth, MA on December 11, 1771.  Which leads me to conclude that Thomas and Hannah Dennis probably moved to the Saratoga Patent in the spring of 1772.  William would have been fifteen years of age at the time.  So presumably he was still living under his parents' roof and came to the Saratoga Patent with them.  Since Hannah was not read out of Saratoga/Easton Meeting until 9th day of the 9th month 1779, I assume that prior to that she and the members of the family were in good standing with the Religious Society of Friend.  So what is a 19 year old William doing in New Bedford, MA where Sarah Jane was born? Did he have extended family with whom he might have lived instead of moving to the Patent with his parents? Who is supposed to be the mother of Sarah Jane, who was born in New Bedford, MA in 1776?  Do you believe Sarah Jane's mother to be Elizabeth Sherman or the theoretical, as yet unnamed first wife? I am just puzzled.  Any clarification would be helpful. Sincerely, Leslie

    3. I am looking for the marriage date of my fifth generation grandparents were William DENNIS and Elizabeth SHERMAN. Elizabeth born 24 Apr. 1759 in Dartmouth, MA and died 14 Aug 1816 Easton, Washington Co., NY. She was the daughter of Benjamin SHERMAN and Elizabeth LAPHAM. William Dennis born 11 Apr 1757 in Dartmouth, MA and died 27 Dec 1805 in Easton, Washington Co., NY. He was the son of Thomas DENNIS and Hannah WILCOX. I am not able to find a marriage date for them. Supposedly they had 12 children, the first, Sarah Jane born 1776 in New Bedford, MA. But according to the Quaker Meeting Minutes below it appears they did not marry until sometime in 1789. These minutes lead me to believe that William Dennis may have had a first wife and the first seven children were with her. In the Quaker Meeting Minutes is the following: "6 day 11 month 1789. Complaint came to this meeting by way of the Preparative Meeting of Saratoga by one of the overseers against Elizabeth Dennis, formerly Shearman for keeping company and marrying out of the unity of Friends after being precautioned therefore this meeting thinks propper to refer this case to next meetings consideration. I am hoping someone has a marrige date for them or information on William Dennis' having a previous marriage. Thanks Carolyn Dennis Kress

    3. C D Kress: They may be saying that the Quakers had no previous record of a marriage. These folk may have married Congregational elsewhere and decided to become Quakers later at this location. They would have a hard time living in any town unmarried. Out in Pennsylvania or Ohio country, maybe. In a civilized town, hardly. If Elizabeth married in 1777, this land was often called Vermont. The Massachusetts colony also claimed jurisdiction. You have a major research project ahead. Been there, done that. Best of luck. 2. Robert Stromberg
    3. Hi, eBay item number 370167692126, a letter from North Greenwich written in 1834, looks interesting. Sorry about the ALL CAPS. Here's the seller's description: Terrific early 2 page stampless folded letter written October 12, 1834 by Isaac (Powan, Powers or a very close spelling) in North Greenwich, New York and sent to his "affectionate brother" Noah (same last name) in Geneva, Ontario County, NY. Detailed letter about family health, friend died of lung fever, Jonathan Rideout (think I got the last name) is in state prison, talks of deaths, births, marriages, moving west, farming, growing fruit trees, land in Nashua etc etc.... Full size scans provide for your research benefit. Postmark is a very scarce No. Greenwich, NY manuscript with a manuscript rate mark 18 3/4 cents and a red NOV 4 date mark CDS which was probably the arrival postmark in Geneva. Letter fully intact and in great shape. Excellent early NY postal history find! Bob Stromberg Greenwich, NY

    2. Hi Susan - regarding not being able to find your family in the 1880 census - have you tried looking for the neighbors from the 1870 census? Then look forward and backward a few pages allowing for the population increase. This has worked for me many times - just an idea. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greetings. Flora McMore was born (presumably in Fort Anne) in 1884. This comes according to the writing on the back of an old photograph of her. I just inherited the photo. I have only guesses as to who this Flora was. Good news: I love old family photos! Bad news: A whole new mystery! (Okay, that's both bad and good news. <g>) Flora's married name was Wilson and I believe she married Albert H. Wilson. It is possible that Flora was the daughter of Ann McKinney and her husband, Norman McMore, both of Fort Anne. I have not been able to find Norman's family in the 1880 census. That would show his children. He appears in the 1870 census of Washington County and also later on, but not in 1880. Is anybody chasing either the McMores, the Wilsons (of South Bay) or the McKinneys (also of South Bay)? Thanks for any tips. 2. "The Northern Post" was the only newspaper listed in NewsBank as being published in Washington County, NY during the war of 1812.  It was published in Salem.   When I ran Porter Hanks' name through the NewsBank search engine, I did not find items mentioning his name in "The Northern Post".  I e-mailed you the articles mentioning Porter Hanks, which I did find.  A more extensive search might produce results tying Porter Hanks to Washington County, NY.  However, I am sorry, but I do not have sufficient time for that kind of research.   ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Shannon" <bshannon@insight.rr.com> To: nywashin@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 3:08:41 PM (GMT-0500) Auto-Detected Subject: [NYWASHIN] Look up at Godfrey Memorial Library Please Would SKS with access to the Godfrey Memorial Library newspaper collection do a lookup for me, please?  I'm trying to find proof that Lt. 3. There were no hits for this exact name from the Newspapers at 'Ancestry.com' It appears from the following that he was born in Mass. "U.S. Army Historical Register, 1789-1903, Vol. 1" [Alphabetized list of 17,500 soldiers who served in the Army between 1789-1903. Additional information for each officer includes: the State or country where born, the State from which originally appointed, the rank attained, and any data relating to appointments or commissions.] 'Hanks, Porter. 3. Thank you to those who replied to my request. I'm convinced that Porter Hanks was from Washington County. Other military records, including his pension file indicate he's from New York. I think he may have been the son of Benjamin Hanks and Anne Hall of Greenwich but so far I have been unable to find proof. They had a son named Porter, but the only date of birth I've found for him is about 1790. Again, thanks to those who answered my request. If anyone runs across anything regarding Porter Hanks in Washington County, please keep me in mind. Barbara Shannon
