    1. [NYWASHIN] Lookup request
    2. eileen bernier
    3. You folks have always been so helpful.someone always seems to come up with the answer I am seeking so I have a couple more questions. 1) If anyone has the book "Death Notices from Washington Co. NY Newspapers 1799-1880" by Mary Smith Jackson and Edward F. Jackson, could you do a lookup for me regarding death of Obadiah Daniels? I believe he died in 1844 (before August) 2) Can anyone tell me what newspapers would have been published then for Granville and where I might be able to locate the archives? Thanks so much for any help. Eileen

    3. Julie in CA: Pember is a great little library with a host of volunteers. I found it one of the few air conditioned public research spots in town during my several summer visits. On your Rutland query, try the Historical Society. They have a great local history collection and some nice people. 3. May I jump in here on geniebug's (Eileen) request for early Granville published death notices or obits. I lost a Hosea Crippen "by accident" in 1801 as the Granville slate business was maturing. Hosea's wife Comfort Hatch Crippen was a founding member of the present Baptist church in Truthville. Hosea and Comfort had a farm north of Truthville on present day Hatch Hill Road. I have reviewed the Truthville cemetery on several ocassions. A few early graves were located on the church side of the road and may have been lost in the move to the present cemetery. Since Hosea's death was termed an accident, there may be a newspaper report somewhere. Any early Granville newspaper that covered the Truthville section would be welcome news to my family history file. 3. Thank you Gloria for the lookup in Cemetery Records for the Township of Ft. Ann, Washington County, NY. I appreciate you taking the time to do that for me. Re the second book I inquired about "Every Name Master Index to Cemetery Records in Washington County, NY." Someone told me about the book, but I haven't found it listed when I googled books so I don't know if it is available for purchase or not. Eileen

    3. I am looking for information on Sarah Turner who married Shubael Swain , a ship captain from nantucket. They lived in NYC beginning 1803 until she died in 1844, and then he moved to Ohio to be with one of his sons and died there. While researching in NYC I saw a death list that said her body was shipped to Newburgh, and that there was no funeral parlor listed- meaning she was to go further. I have wondered if her family came from the group of Nantucket people who moved form there to Easton before 1770. If anyone can help, I am getting desperate. She is a total mystery, but her husband isn;t. Thanks, Sue

    2. Please, if anyone has the Granville Cemetery book by Margaret Jenks, would you please do a look up for me. I spent yesterday hiking through Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery and St. Patrick's. I was told by a distant cousin that there was a stone dedicate to Edward Doyle by his brother Owen Doyle from Kilkenny. This Edward is believed to be the husband of Mary Conway Doyle who is buried in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery with her daughter's family (Richard and Catherine Doyle Dalton). I have found their stone without a problem but can't find the stone of Edward. Also, I once saw a stone in St. Patrick's cemetery for Sylvester Maddock but when I went looking for it could not find it. It's not a big cemetery, but I was having no luck finding it. If anyone, could look this up for me I would appreciate it. I do have to return home tomorrow and if I can't find it this time I'm up here perhaps with your help I can find it the next time. 3. Castleton State College will not share student records or confirm a person was a student, no matter how far back they go. I tried to obtain confirmation of a relative of mine who was student there in the 1860's and was repeatedly told I had to have written ok of the student. Orange Hyde Douglass, June 10, 1806 - Dec. 28, 1831, is buried in the Episcopal Cemetery, Granville. The cemetery is on the corner of East Main Street (Route 149) and Court Street and behind the Trinity Episcopal Church built in 1815. {Source: Granville Cemetery Inscriptions, Washington County, New York, by Margaret R. Jenks} Copy of that is available at Pember Library if you need to look further for other relatives. Check with the Clerk's office (opposite Granville High School) for birth / death certificate. The Douglass farm is located not far from the new Haynes House of Hope on Route 149 and just it is off Route 149 heading south. I don't know the name of that sideroad but someone on the list probably does.
