    3. Joann, I checked for Cleveland marriages in the Jackson, Jackson book of Marriage Notices from Washington County NY Newspapers 1799-1880 thinking this will allow for any spelling of Reed, Reid, I found only 1 Sarah and the marriage was in 1839. Salem does have good vital records, it has been years since I have been there, but they have several books of vitals. Also try www.co.washington.NY.us they have published some marriages there. You will want to use the Ctrl "F" feature since nothing is alphabetized. Dates start at 1795 and go through 1813. This is not a complete list. 3. I know that NY didn't require vital records to be recorded as far back as 1814, but I am seeking information on the above couple who were from Sandgate, VT. Would Washington Co. have any information on a marriage for them in 1814? Thanks, Joann Nichols

    3. Is it 1855 or 1885? NYS did not require records of births, deaths and marriages until about 1881. If it is 1885 that you are interested in go to the Granville Town Clerk. 3. We have a family and neighborhood plot that we found. It is in DeKalb County IL.(out of Sycamore) (this family did come from Washington Co NY). Anyway, they had a family/neighbor plot that was out in a field. After the farm was sold, the sale said they had to keep the cemetery fenced and clear. They did not honor that agreement. Pigs were allowed to root through the area. When I "found" it it was deep far back in a corn field. And a Mess! One of my cousins had also found it and she was able to get a group together a couple years later and they all went out there and cleaned underbrunch, dead trees and etc. Then they tried to set up stones, mark graves that the stones were all broken up. Tried to dig up sunken stones so they could be read. They did find a map of this cemetery at the DeKalb Historical Society which helped with the project. I did not get to join them, but wish I could have. There is also another family that were Quakers near Easton, Washington CO NY. Quakers do not use cemetery stones. This cousin did visit the Historical Society and did go out and think she did locate the old homestead. She found where the the foundation of the house was, etc, but would never be sure of the exact location of that cemetery, unfortunately. Wish they had left maps of those things, but I suppose they told families down through a few generations, until it became "family tradition". I know there are lots more stories like this. Gayle

    3. This is in regards to the findings of old cemeteries on private property. One person said "Usueally" people will respect the stones that are there and leave them alone. I'm glad they said "usually" because there was recently a court case in Vermont where a person purchased some ten acres of land. There was an old cemetery on the property and he wanted to dig it up and move the people there to another location. VOCA (Vermont Old Cemetery Association) stepped in to prevent it. It ended up in court. The man's reasoning was that he didn't want his children playing there. But the courts ruled againist VOCA and the owner is going to be permitted to disenter the bodies. If I remember correctlly, at least one of the graves was that of a Revolutionary War soldier. Eileen

    3. Hello all, Between Charles Moore and Peggy Jenks most of the cemeteries in Washington Co. have been recorded, I say most because at least a couple of the farm cemeteries have been lost. I personally was searching for a cemetery, an old time said my ancestors were buried in. I couldn't find any trace of it so I flagged down a man on a tractor and asked if there was a cemetery on his property. He said " there used to be but the owner before me plowed the stones over and there's no sign of them now". Sad. There are cases where only field stones were used as markers and they too have been lost. A group of girl scouts cleaned up a cemetery in Greenwich in which only a few stones were standing, they found a lot of stones that were down buried and broken and were able to list some that were not recored and corrected a couple that were recorded incorrectly. There is a great need for the old cemeteries to be restored but it isn't something towns say they can take care of, stating the lack of man-power or the funds to keep them up. Not all cemeteries are on line so if my office can help you with a lookup let me know. We cannot do research for you without the required fee, but we can search our cemetery records. You can email me wchist@co.washington.ny.us my office is only open on Tues. and Weds. so please take that into consideration. Loretta Bates Wash. Co. Deputy Historian

    3. Hi All; If there's a stone on farm cemeteries it's been recorded and printed. Example, my Wakeley's had a farm in Johnsburg and I've been there and seen the stones. Usually no matter who owns the land now they respect the graves and leave them alone. Yes, we also know that there's some graves without stones for the habit of having a mound can still be found. 3. Hello and Happy Mother's Day! I'm a member at findagrave.com. I spent some time at the website yesterday looking for some of my relatives that I know lived and died in Washington County. Many were missing. I know there are a handful of reasons that could happen. For instance, not all of the people in the cemeteries are listed, even with gravestones present. But, I was thinking of other reasons. Because there have been residents in this county since the 1700's, perhaps there were quite a few burials on their own farms. Info gets lost over the years, especially about those without markers. But I'm wondering if it's possible, using occupants' knowledge of the property or historical newspaper info, to locate and identify old gravesites. I suppose that would only recover the locations of perhaps half, if that, but still, that would be pretty neat, not to mention helpful, to genealogists. By "old", I mean pre-1850. Perhaps I'm late to the game and this is already going on. Any thoughts on this? Jan G.
