    1. [NYWASHIN] 1931 Fire in Granville
    2. Source, The Poultney Journal--Fri. March 27, 1931. DISASTROUS FIRE AT GRANVILLE. Loss of Several Hundred Thousand Dollars. Shortly after 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning fire was discovered by M. Frydberg, merchant and block owner on the south side of main street, Granville, when arouse by his wife who thought she could smell smoke, Mr. Frydberg arose and turned on the light and realized that the house was filled with smoke. He hurried outdoors and could see huge flame, coming out of the windows in the next block, the Pagonis block fire apparently being in a vacant store. He returned to get his wife and they were forced to get out clad only in their night clothing. An alarm was hurriedly sent in and the fire companies quickly responded. For a time they thought the fire would be arrested, but with a strong south wind this proved impossible, without assistance. Calls for help were sent to the night operator at the telephone exchange and the local chemical was dispatched ; and the companies at Hudson Falls and Glens Falls, also firemen from Middle Granville and West Pawlet rushed to the scene. So intense was the heat that little could be accomplished from in front of the buildings, and the fire fighting was carried on from the rear. Aided by the south wind the flames leaped across the street and attacked the Farmers' National bank and the Bloom store adjoining . Before the flames were subdued there were destroyed on the south side, the Berkowitz dry goods store, Smith's barber shop, Jones' tailor shop, the Potter Press, Victor Mancini's shoe shop, Murphy Brothers cigar store, Roy William's sporting goods and news agency, Frydberg's ready-to-wear store, Daniels' barber shop, and the building belonging to Mrs. Josephine Barker. On the north side the awing over the windows of the J.B. McCormick law office caught fire and spread to the roof of the building, that of the Farmers' bank. The roof was quickly consumed and the next block belonging to Sol Bloom was soon a mass of flames, threatening the Cross jewelry store, Wilson Clothing company, and the Potter millinery. A slight rain commenced falling at about 6:30, and it was at this time that the flames were sufficiently subdued as to assure cessation. There is a strong suspicion that the fire was the work of an arson, but this has not been fully determined . The loss will run over a half million dollars. Transcribed by, Joan H. Bixby

    3. I am seeking information on some Read/Reid/Reed people who came to Sandgate, Bennington Co., VT at an early date from Washington Co., NY: Thomas Read of White Creek, County of Charlotte, NY, 27 Dec. 1785. Mathias Read of Salem, Washington Co., NY, 20 Sept. 1791. James Reed of Salem, Washington Co., NY, 22 Sept. 1823. Is anyone familiar with any of these Reed families? Are they somehow connected? Thank you very much for your assistance, Joann Nichols

    3. Ann, I have a dozen or more READ, REED, REID family group sheets from the Old Cambridge District, but none of them are actually compiled in to family units, more or less just miscellaneous scraps as I gathered them through the years. The only Thomas I have is a marriage record. Thomas REID of West Arlington, VT married Addie S. BISHOP [np] 0n 31 OCT 1876, at the Cambridge ME Church, by Rev. S.M. WILLIAMS. There were REEDs in the area Scots/Irish from before the revolution. Connected with the early Presbyterian church in Cambridge. 3. Hi Dick, I have tons of White Creek info, but no direct answer to your question. Here is one possibility on the daughter. Elias J. BENTLEY, of Mancheter, VT and Emily J. MARSH of Arlington, VT were married 11 DEC 1866 at the Cambridge [NY] ME church, at the parsonage, by Rev. J.W. EATON. (former town of White Creek historian's records) Arlington is just a short walk away from North White Creek. Maybe you could check the Vermont Vital Records microfilm that is at the OCPL and pick up some clues. The DORRs were a prominent family in WC, couple of doctors, old time family. 3. Hi, Rich, Do you have in your White Creek material, any references to the Thomas Reed family? In the 1855 State Census, the family consisted of: Thomas Reed- age 66 -Farmer Catherine S Reed -age 55 Thomas Reed- age 33- Simon Reed- age 19 Catherine Reed- age 28 Three boarders -John, John, and Patrick (no last names listed) All of these people were born in Ireland, and with the exception of Thomas (age 33) and the boarders, said they had been in town for one year. Young Thomas is listed as being in town 5 years. By 1860, Thomas, Sr. is gone. We can find no record of his death or burial. Thomas, Jr. and family are in Jackson, along with Catherine, Sr. Family name is spelled REID. 1865 finds the family in Cambridge, with Catherine Reed, wife, listed as the mother of 8 children, although only 6 are listed. Some where between 1855, and 1865, there were two other children who were born, died, and were buried. No records seem to be around. Family name is spelled REED. 1870 has them back in WC, under REID. By 1875, they were in Cohoes, and stayed there. Thomas and Catherine bought and sold land at a great rate in Washington County. I have most, if not all, of the deeds. If you have anything on this family, I'd appreciate knowing about it. I'm particularly interested in the deaths of THOMAS, Sr., and the two missing children.

MARSH, age 19, and her daughter, Hattie E. MARSH, age 1. All were natives of New York. Who was Emma’s husband. When and where did he die and is buried?
