In Washington County, NY -- Dresden - Fort Ann area: I am still digging/looking for some connection between the DOREN-HULETT-STEERE families. . One researcher has said that Oliver L Steere (1808-1882) and James Doren (1822-1898) were half-brothers...Since Topsey Hulett Steere (Oliver's Mother) and James Doren share a gravesite ( Boardman Cemetery, Whitehall, NY), it is possible. I have nothing on Topsey Hulett Steere ( married to Caleb Steere, Jr) but quite a bit on James Doren, but nothing else that ties him to her or Oliver. ANY INFORMATION AT ALL could be a clue. Hi, folks I have an ancestor, James Dixon (1731-1823), apparently born in Ireland, who lived in Washington County in the late 18th Century, then moved on to Cayuga County, where he died. Here is how it's put in the History of Cayuga County: "James Dixon and Major Eli Wilson, from Hebron, Washington County, the later with his wife, Margaret, and daughter, Amy, came into the town near the beginning of the present century, and settled on a soldier's grant of 600 acres, on the east line of the town (Township of Mentz)..." In looking through this book, I saw a lot of references to other families -- Taylors, Harkers, Hamiltons, Hopkins -- who moved from the Hebron area. Since my James Dixon is something of a mystery, I'm trying to trace his origins. He may have served in the Revolution because he settled on a soldier's grant. But I've found no evidence of military service, so he could as easily have bought the grant from someone else. Does anyone know why people around Hebron would have been moving out in large numbers about 1800? Was there, for instance, a church whose members moved as a body? Mark E. Dixon Wayne, PA

I am looking for information on the above items. I have a few original diary pages from 1809 attributed by a note of recent vintage to Linas KELLAM, asserted in the note to be a member of the Boston Tea Party. In addition to the above items mentioned in the diary, there is also mention of Mr. Rockwood, Mr. Holebrook, Mr. Forman, Joel Jones, Mr. Herrington, all apparently neighbors. Esan (Ethan?) Clark is also mentioned, and a place called Fosters Inn. Kellam may have been a teacher as of December 1808 in a local school. He refers to a school in Argyle near Mr. Hubbard's. The diary reflects that Kellam works on the farm of Capt. Vaughan, who has a wife and children. Can anyone shed any light on this Kellam? I have no confirmation of his name, his location, or anything else. The above info is all drawn from the diary. Knut Barde
