    3. Schoolcraft, Orcutt, Squires, Strong, Cummings, Biggs, Chatfield, Sisco, Boomhower. Some of those are in Bennington Co. VT. There are numerous spelling variants to most. Schoolcraft Sisco and Boomhower are major interests for me so anything in Washington County from any time frame before 1900 is relevant. Biggs, Orcutt and Chatfield are early ones. Anything later than 1850 is not going to be relevant to me. Squires is primarily in Arlington VT and my interest is the earlier ones - before 1850. Strong and Cummings are in Hebron and I pick them up around 1830. Stuff before 1900 is relevant.

    3. I have just uploaded Item 6 of the LDS film #1304663 which is titled Alien Declarations. I have transcribed this item, like the first 5 items for the Irish born only. Besides Rensselaer county, there are many from Albany, Saratoga and Washington Counties. Most give the county in Ireland of birth and many even give the townland. While these can be valuable to your research when trying to find the county in Ireland where your ancestor was born, I would like to relate a personal problem I had with an alien declaration of my gggrandfather, Timothy O'Connor. I found Timothy's naturalization papers way back in the early 1990s on one of my first genealogy trips back to Troy. I was a bit surprised, however, when they stated he was born in County Limerick because my babybook had him born in County Tipperary. Well, after about five or so years of more research, I located a Timothy O'Connor in Cappamore, County Limerick. I also found in the tithes (generation before Timothy) a Bryan O'Connor which was Timothy's father's name (from his death certificate). However, I was never able to find his son, James' death cert in Troy or his baptism record in Ireland. Well, to make a very long story shorter, I found my ggrandfather's death cert and his obituary in early 2003. Both listed County Tipperary as his birth county, plus his sister's name. About a year ago, I obtained her death cert from Albany and it gave her birthday and that she was born in County Tipperary. I then had research done in Tipperary and while they still couldn't find my James' baptism, they found his sister's in Tipperary Parish, in County Tipperary! So, why did Timothy's naturalization papers say Limerick? Well a few months ago I found the his passenger records for the port and year in the naturalization papers and the ship the family came over on was "City of Limerick", so now I believe that there was a communication problem going on between the county clerk and Timothy when he filed his papers. I should mention, however, that while I have not been able to find Timothy's baptism record, both his daughter and his son had he was born in County Tipperary on their death certs. His had he was born in Ireland. You can find the naturalization records on the Rensselaer County website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyrenss2/ Or on the Troy section of my website, the url is under my name. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing mail virus free, scanned by ZoneAlarm AntiVirus

    3. Hi Janet, Perhaps it was my post you saw -- I changed my e-mail provider about a year ago and neglected to re-post. My great-grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Hines, born 1862 in North Adams, MA. When she married in 1893 she gave her parents as John HINES and Mary TIERNEY, however, she was orphaned early and grew up in Ft. Edward, NY. In 1870 she was living in the home of Aaron P. Willis; in 1880 she was listed as a servant in the same household. I have not found her on the 1865 census; she was not with Aaron Willis, who at that time was living in Argyle. Close friends in Ft. Edward were the McDOUGALLS (especially Anna McDougall, born Anna WILDER) and the John DURKEES. She was a seamstress, living at a boarding house, at the time of her marriage. On the 1880 census Mary E. said her parents were from Ireland. After she married my very English g-grandfather she changed her story on each census until she eventually had them both born in MA. I have copies of a couple of pictures of Mary E. ca. 1890s , and one of a young man that has the name Thomas Hinds on it (brother, cousin?). And that is all I know of Mary Elizabeth Hines despite the fact that I actually met her when I was a small child. She was nearly 100 when she died. Grandma Hodges (as I knew her) is a great mystery in the family, and my brick wall. The story my father and aunt grew up with was that she was an orphan of Scottish descent, and had no idea who her parents were. She was the mother of her Methodist church. Instead, my research has shown she knew her parents names, and is pointing to Irish Catholic (causing much consternation in the family). I have found no birth record for Mary E. anywhere in the northeast US, or marriage record for her parents. In fact, I've yet to find a suitable Mary Tierney in the records; there were many MTs, but none have tracked out. The same is true of John Hines; I have found one possible in Warrensburgh, NY in 1860, an Irish immigrant. I lost track of him after that. So, there you have it. My gut tells me perhaps Mary E.'s parents never made it to the altar, her mother died in childbirth or shortly thereafter, and her father either died or took off. If her birth had been legitimate and she had been orphaned, I would have thought she would have been taken in by family, which was not the case. Of course, I have no proof of any of this, it's just the speculation of the frustrated. Does any of it sound familiar???? You can contact me off-list. 1. Fort Ann, 10 Octobe 1780
    2. Richard J. Riley
    3. On October 10, 1780 a force of about 600 British soldiers and 300 Indians, commanded by Major Christopher Carleton, captured Fort Ann, NY. The soldiers in this garrison, commanded by Captain Adial Sherwood, numbered sixty to seventy militiamen. The captured patriots were taken to Canada and held as prisoners of war until May 1782. The Lieutenants were Cornelius Baldwin and Ezekiel Roberts. Some of the soldiers identified through their Revolutionary War pension application records are: Robert Hopkins, Samuel Brown, Ephraim Thomas, Benjamin Wing, Daniel Wing and Cornelius Van Tassel. Through specific family history pages viewed on Web sites, Elisha Fitch and Henry Van Woert have been identified as probable comrades. While the capture of Fort Ann in 1780 was not as significant in the Revolutionary War as many other events, it was significant to those patriots and their descendants. Perhaps you are a descendant of one of these patriots. Or, perhaps you know the names of others captured at Fort Ann on October 10, 1780? If you have a pension application, or other documentation, for a patriot who served with Captain Adial Sherwood at Fort Ann and is not identified above, please let me know. I want to write a short piece about the capture of Fort Ann and the imprisonment of these men by the British. I'm also interested in placing this event in historical context so supplementary sources would be helpful. Thank you very much. Richard

    3. Jan, Thanks for the information, but unfortunately this is a different John Searles. I got this John L. Searles War of 1812 pension file from the National Archives. In 1871 this John Searles, aged 75 years old appeared before the court in Montgomery, Franklin Co., VT. and asked for a pension. There is some good genealogy information in this file, but it is not my John Searles. My ancestor, John Searles who served in Pliny Adams Regiment of New York Militia died in 1848 in Milford Township, La Grange Co., Indiana. 3. Lynn, I don't have any information on Myndert Van de Bogert.Sorry. I got the names of the men in Pliny Adams Regiment from a cousin who has a CD on New York in the War of 1812. She only copied the names of the men we were interested in, not the names of the entire Regiment. I got copies of the actual service records from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. You can go there and get the records, you can use their forums and request the information directly from them, or you can hire a professional genealogist to do it for you. I have done all three in the past. If you go there, the War of 1812 Records are stored on a different floor than the floor that the Library is on.... SO you have to request the specific War of 1812 records that you are interested in and it takes several hours for them to get your records for you. So, get there in the morning and be able to stay pretty much all day. You can request the information from them by mail. You need to use their forums, pay a fee! , and it takes a while---but it works. Last time, I hired a professional genealogist. He charged me $ 20.00 per service record. Now, having said all that, I don't think a service record is worth all the time, effort and money it takes to get it.....UNLESS you have a specific reason to get it. In my case, I was trying to figure out relationships between 8 men all named Searles who fought in the same Regiment. I, and about 7 other researchers, have been trying for several years to put these men in family groups and prove parentage. We wanted the service records to see if they could help us in our task.( 1) we speculated that men more closely related would tend to serve together OR ( 2) we speculated that men from the same town would be placed in the same Company. We found out from the service records that all of the Searles men enlisted and served the exact same days and were discharged on the same day at the same place, Burlington, VT. Five of the Searles men all served in o! ne Company of the Regiment AND we know that 4 of these men where broth ers,-- Abraham, Isaac,Samuel, and Jacob,-- and and the 5th man was their uncle, Jeriah. We believe that they all lived in Whitehall. Two of the Searles men served in another Company. I believe that they were brothers-in-law. One of them, William, is also a brother-in-law of Jeriah in the first Company ( a Searles married a Searles) and the other, Elijah, is also an uncle of the four men in the 1st Company and a brother of Jeriah. We know from the 1810 & 1820 census one of them lived in Granville and the other lived in Hampton. Finally, the last Searles' man who served in Pliny Adam's Regiment, served in yet a different Company. This is the man from whom I believe that I'm descended--John Searles. Putting lots of speculation together, I believe that he may be the son of the John and Abigail Searles from Salem. AND he is not as closely related to the other Searles men. I'm not sure where he lived, but it may have been Salem.I am pretty sure that the John Searles on 1790 census! of Salem, is a uncle of Jeriah and Elijah, and the Abigail Searles on subsquent censuses is his wife. All told, War of 1812 pension records would be the BEST to get, they would have MUCH more information. But none of these Searles' men had pension records.
