    3. Got this off another list. Thought I'd pass along. In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. 2. Jan J.
    3. Hi Judith, THANKS :) so much for this lookup the obituary of my great grand uncle. Jan, jnrose at webtv dot net From Granville, NY Sentinel 15 August 1930: "Raceville" [which is a small hamlet North of Granville, New York]          "Mr. and Mrs. N.R. Owens and family were callers at Mrs. C.W. Race's on Monday. They attended the funeral of Mr. Owens' uncle of Granville, New York, who was with his sister in Poultney, Vermont at the time of his death." ============================== OBITUARY 9 Aug. 1930 WILLIAM R. OWENS         "The death of William R. Owens occurred Friday afternoon at the home of his sister Miss Margaret Owens in Poultney, Vermont, where she resides in the summer. Although he had been in declining health for some time, his death came suddenly. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs Morris Owens and had been born in North Poultney, Vermont, 62 years ago. He married Miss Margaret Hughes of Granville, NY, and one child was born to them who died in infancy. Most of his life was spent in Granville, NY, and vicinity. For several years Mr. and Mrs. Owens resided at Lake Saint Catherine during the summer season where they were well known as caterers to the public and particularly to the Lake residents. After the death of his wife 6 years ago, he sold his home here to Culver Brown with whom he made his home for the past two years, Mr. Brown being a cousin. For some time he was the well known and genial manager of the Granville Inn and for many years previous had been in the M.J. Hayes Market. Few men were as well liked than was Will Owen who always had a kind word for everyone. The winter of 1928/29 he spent in Florida hoping to regain his health which was becoming impaired. He returned North feeling much better, but there was a return of his old trouble a few months since. Survivors include five sisters: Mrs. John Fallon of Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Ruth Watts of NYC, NY, Miss Margaret Owens a teacher in New Rochelle, New York, Mrs. W.G. Phillips and Mrs. O.L. Jones of Poultney, Vermont, Two brothers: Edward Owens of Saint Petersburg, Florida and Robert Owens. Together with other relatives.         The funeral was held Monday in Poultney, Vermont, and burial was at Metowee Cemetery in Granville, NY." Also, the Granville Inn and the MJ Hayes Market were located in the same building, 71 Main Street, and were owned by two women, Mrs. Nan Hayes and a---- Lawter. Some of the prices listed at the local shops- Genuine lamb legs 35 cents, spring lamb chops 25 cents, broiler chickens 40 cents, hamburger 10 cents, and bread was 7 cents! And the "Last of the Silents" a batch of movies was playing at the theater!

    3. Ruth, I don't know the papers as well as some would. I'm sure there are several researchers in my area that are in and out of the Historians office and can take a quick look for you. The papers are alphabetized. If I go in the near future I'll take a look. Also, you could contact the historian there with a request to look. I'm sure they would be obliging. 3. Just a word of caution for those of you who may not know - - - A personal email address can be found by clicking the blue link next to the author's name. This brings up a page showing the email address in a bitmap format and the authors posting history. Rootsweb and Ancestry do it this way because email addresses cannot be "harvested" by spammers in the bitmap format. You have to be on the message Boards themselves to do this; you won't find it within mailing lists from those boards. Messages arriving to your email through the mailing lists include the senders address because they are private emails, not a public forum. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.s tates.vermont.counties.rutland> &r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.vermont.counties.rutland Messages posted to this board also appear in the "VTRUTLAN-L at Rootsweb com" mailing list. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.s tates.newyork.counties.washington> &r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.washington Messages posted to this board also appear in the "NYWASHIN-L at Rootsweb com " mailing list. If you post your actual email address in the message itself, it is fair game for spammers. Message boards are a favorite hunting ground for these people. If you have posted your email address within an actual message, you may have noticed an influx of spam. Even though email programs have spam filters, I personally hate to see it appear even in my "junk" folder! You could also use the actual words "at dot com" or "at dot net" never using the "@" symbol.
