    1. Glens Falls address
    2. Carol Landergott
    3. Maybe giving this address from an old ca. 1910 photo will help break up my brick wall. This picture is of a man & woman, signed on the back is Aunt Maggie & Uncle Corvis? Austin, 53 Lawrence, Glens Falls, NY. Is it possible that someone could do a look up on this address around that time frame? It isn't the Austin's I'm looking for but I believe they have some connection to the Wilde/Wildey family of Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, & Lake George, NY. Or to my g.g. grandmother, Alice Stephens that married Charles H. Wilde. Thanks for any help! Carolyn caland36@prodigy.net

    1. NEW Feature added to Warren County USGenWeb Page
    2. Hello All: I have added links to the GenConnect bulletin boards for Queries, Bible Records, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, or Wills. These include picture icons. There is also a search engine that will search any postings in those categories. Please use them and add information to the databases to help everyone. I'm on break between census operations (after 6 months), so I'll be adding links to other researchers websites over the next week. Thanks for your understanding and patience. 1. John Butler Yeats
    2. SLWillig
    3. Hi, everybody - The name, John Butler Yeats, is familiar, right? But hold on a minute! That's WILLIAM Butler Yeats, poet extraodinaire and famed Irish icon. So, who is John Butler Yeats and what the heck does he have to do with Warren County, NY? Well, that would be the FATHER of the famous poet, William Butler Yeats. Yes, John, the father (are you following this? <g>) is buried right up in Chestertown, Warren County, NY!! There was an article about said burial in the "Glens Falls Post Star" on May 27th. The grave of said Mr. Yeats lies in the Chestertown Cemetery. More specific information than that was not in the article, nor was it explained exactly why the father of the famous poet would turn up buried in Warren County, NY, while his son went on to fame and fortune in Ireland. So, we are left to speculate. The article mentions Rt. 9, although it doesn't say that the cemetery is actually ON Rt. 9. There is a Chester Rural Cemetery, which is on the right side of Rt 9 if you're going south out of the village of Chestertown. That's probably the one in question. The headstone reads, "In remembrance of John Butler Yeats of Dublin, Ireland, Painter and Writer. Born in Ireland Mar 16, 1889. Died in NY City Feb. 3, 1922". Which only serves to deepen the mystery. An Irishman, born in Dublin, dying in New York City, but buried in Chestertown? Would that the obvious questions had been answered in the article! Oh, well... Stay tuned. The town of Chestertown will hold a symposium in September of 2001 - a Yeats international symposium! The title of this gathering will be "Prodigal Father: John B. Yeats, his family and his American friends". Surely the answers will be forthcoming then! Happy Sunday, all! 2. SLWillig
    3. Hi, Louise! That's an interesting reference you have there. There is a Round Pond for sure, and an Oneida Corners. The latter was a thriving little hamlet just outside of Glens Falls - up at the corner of Ridge Road (Rt. 9L) and Rt. 54, which is known locally as the Sunnyside Road. Round Pond, however, is a ways from there - to the southwest and just north of Rt. 17. It is a small pond (although in Arizona it would be called a major lake!). The record you have might refer to Lake Sunnyside, which is the closest body of water to Oneida Corners. It might at one time have been called Round Pond. Sunnyside (the water) is just a stone's throw from Oneida Corners. Have you checked out the Warren County GenExchange site yet? If not, it would be worth a look: http://www.genexchange.org/ny/warren/index.cfm Best of luck to you, Louise! 1. 100 years ago...
    2. Susan Laursen Willig
    3. Hi, y'all... Thought you might enjoy seeing these stats. 100 Years Ago... The average life expectancy in the United States was 47. Only 14 percent of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and $4000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and Influenza, 2. Tuberculosis, 3. Diarrhea, 4. Heart disease, 5. Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy were an ongoing problem in Denver and other cities in the West. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the 1900 census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were about 230 reported murders in the U.S. annually. It was compiled by Hazel Randall Gordon and called "Starbuck Hill Cemetery, Chestertown, NY." It was done many years ago, but no publication date is listed. In the 1930s, a collection was taken to erect a fence around the graveyard, and donations came mostly from descendants of those buried there. The book lists the amount donated by each person. I have the following ancestors buried there: Richard Pri(t)chard, d. May 27, 1816, aged 45 yrs., 10 mos., 20 days; his wife Mary (Jeffreys) Pri(t)chard, d. 1. FYI: NARA Reproduction Fee Schedule (Proposed)
    2. nee
    3. The NARA proposal to revamp the system and fees for providing copies of Military Service Records, Bounty-Land Warrant Applications Files, and Pension Application Files has been published in the 25 April 2000 issue of the Federal Register. Public comment is invited and should be directed to NARA Regulation Comment Desk 8601 Adelphi Road College Park, MD 20740-6001 Fax: 301 713-7270 The comment period closes on 26 June 2000. NARA prefers that you use either the postal address or fax number to submit our comments rather than e-mail. A complete copy of the Federal Register notice is available from the NARA Web site at http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html. The proposed Reproduction Fee Schedule covers a number of items, but the Military Service Records, and the Pension and Bounty-Land Warrants are of the greatest concern to genealogists. NARA proposes three major changes: 1. The NATF Form 80 would be discontinued, to be replaced by two new forms: NATF Form 85 to request both Bounty-Land Warrant application files and Pension files (more than 75 years old), and NATF From 86 to request Military Service Records (more than 75 years old). 2. For all three types of files, NARA would no longer send a selection of pages, but would send the complete file. This would eliminate the two-step process currently used and should be beneficial to most genealogists. 3. The fees for all three types of files would be raised. For Military Service Records the new fee would be $17.00, regardless of the number of pages included in the file. For Bounty-land Warrants the fee would be $17.25, again without regard to the number of pages. For Pension Files the fee would be $40.00, regardless of the number of pages. Finally, the proposal would go into effect on 1 September 2000, if approved. Many genealogists may consider the proposed fees to be excessive. NARA specifically invites comment on the proposed fee schedule. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee urges everyone who wants to comment to carefully read the full proposal before submitting comments. The proposed fees are intended to cover the actual cost of locating, copying and mailing the records, plus 10% as authorized by law, and are based on the average size of the files. NARA states that the average for Military Service Records and Bounty-land Applications is somewhere under 20 pages, while the average for full Pension Files is 105 pages. The FGS/NGS Records Preservation and Access Committee will be looking at the NARA proposal carefully, and will submit comments as appropriate. Individuals who would like to provide input to the Committee's evaluation are welcome to do so but are also encouraged to comment direct to NARA at the address given above. Comments for Committee consideration should be e-mailed to fgs-access@fgs.org, or mailed to Federation of Genealogical Societies, Attention: RPAC, PO Box 200940, Austin, TX 78720-0940. In order for the Records Preservation and Access Committee to adequately evaluate such input it must be received by 26 May 2000. The deadline for comment to NARA, however, is still 26 June 2000. Posting of this message to other mail lists is encouraged. A copy of this message will also be available on the Records Preservation and Access page of the FGS Web site <http://www.fgs.org/fgs-recordsnews.htm> and on the NGS Web site <http://www.ngsgenealogy.org> ****

    1. Note from Todd Easton; Warren County CC
    2. Hello Everyone: There has been some concern about the lack of new added information to the Warren County site. I would like to reassure everyone that I have been collecting all your e-mails and new links and will soon be adding new information to the site. I realize; not much other than some updates have been done in quite some time. I did add a very capable assistant; Wanda Ross who is currently learning html so she can help out. Not to make much in the way of excuses, but my job is a Field Operations Manager for the US Census Bureau. Obviously at this time we are currently very busy. We are running multiple operations at different times and have been for months. The hours can be ridiculous. We should be wrapped up within 10 weeks. However I do hope to find time to catch up the page. When it comes to priorities this one consistently gets "knocked" to the bottom. Please be patient and be reassured that there are some new additions just over the horizons. Wanda will be doing a total make over of our cemetery indexes with some added new links. We also will be adding about 5-6 links for home pages. I also have almost completed Warrensburg for the 1850 census. Also many of you have started home pages and we will be including your information. When we start adding the information again it should be fast and furious. PLEASE do not respond or post to this message. If you have any comments send them directly to myself at ordigger@aol.com. I will be away from this computer until late this week though.
