    3. Has anybody every heard of a cemetery called Dodd Mill Cemetery in Warren Co? If so, where is it? I checked the GNIS search website but it's not listed... Can't seem to find it anywhere. According to someone who submitted a few burials online for a Dodd Mill Cemetery, the information came from a DAR collection of headstone inscriptions transcribed in the mid 1970's. Thanks. Susan

    1. Genealogists - we are the chosen
    2. Jackie Wolcott Elder
    3. My cousin just sent me this - I thought you might like it... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. 3. Hi, Jackie - ><<Does anyone have any idea where this is?Jackie>> Well, there may or may not be one in Warren Co. (don't know of one, but that doesn't mean there isn't one! <g>), but there are Lake View Cemeteries in the following NY counties: Chautauqua, Monroe and Tompkins. And if you spell it as one word, Lakeview, then there are even more, but the closest to Warren County is the one in the town of Charlotte, Essex County. Good luck! Susan

    1. Closson & Rivette information
    2. mike engle
    3. Hello, I am doing research on lunch wagons and diners. I have many more questions than these two, but these are at the top of my list. I am researching Albert Closson who died in Glens Falls somewhere between 1927 and 1929. I'm new at the person researching side of things, so I'm interested in learning the best way to find his exact date of death, and to find his will. The worst thing is that all his children died before they had any children of their own, so his line is basicly dead. ------ Samuel Rivette Unlike Albert Closson, which I was able to find out other information for on a Closson Mailing list. I can not find anything for Rivette's on the net. It's porbably a shot in the dark, but does the name Rivette sound familiar to anyone? ------- Also, if anyone has ANY information on diners or lunch wagons in Warren County, please let me hear about your story! Best Regards Mike Engle _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    1. CRANNELL
    2. Jackie Wolcott Elder
    3. Since this was a popular surname for the area, I thought I would pass this along. Anyone researching the Crannell's, please see below: o In the course of purchasing 19th-century photographs I have acquired two that I would like to return to their proper families. -- daguerreotype of William Winslow CRANNELL, taken in Albany, New York on 23 March 1855. He appears to be in his mid-twenties. The picture has been reglazed and resealed, but the original seal has been preserved along with the note of identification. -- ambrotype of Carlton Cornelius HERENDAN, taken around 1854, when he was about four years old. There is a label on the back with his name and the word "Daddy." I ask only to cover my purchase price plus shipping and packaging. If either man is of your family, please contact me. 1. OLDER
    2. Kathy, I know for sure OLDER is in the area in 1798. Nathanial OLDER witnessed David PRINCE's will in Easton, NY - Which is in Washington County. I've seen a copy of the will and OLDER is very clearly written. I'd like to know what the OLDER family relationship is to the PRINCE family. Regards, Annette

    2. Kathy Campbell
    3. Can anyone tell me if there were two different families with similar spellings of their name in Warren County? I keep finding the name OLDEN, and now I am finding the name OLDER? Or, is it just a census taker's mistake, and should be one or the other? Thanks. kathy

    1. French & Indian War Reenactment
    2. SLWillig
    3. This week there will be a large group of military folks gathering at Lake George Village and an even larger group of those folks gathering at Ticonderoga! The occasion is a reenactment of the Battle for Ft. Ticonderoga during the French and Indian War. The weekend is the time for the Grand Encampment - the largest part of the reenactment - and that's all to be held in the village of Ticonderoga in Essex County. What makes this year's big event so unique is that a skirmish just prior to the big battle will also be reenacted. This skirmish took place on July 6, 1758, and during that encounter the much beloved Lord Viscount Howe was killed. That may have turned the tide of the big battle to come, as Howe was an excellent military tactician and the British hope for success against Montcalm and his much smaller French force. Bob Bearor, history buff and a reenactor himself, was asked to organize this large endeavor. (He is also the author of two books on the subject: "Battle on Snowshoes", and "French and Indian War Battlesites".) It was Bearor, a resident of Newcomb, N.Y., who discovered the actual site of that skirmish, which had long been the subject of debate among historians. Unfortunately, this event is a one-time deal. The land on which the skirmish took place is privately owned. By this time next year, Bearor says that the owners will have constructed a trailer park on the property. Sadly this is what happens to historical sites all too often... Reenactors from all over the U.S. and from many other countries will be in attendance. They're even bringing bateaux which will be launched early tomorrow morning (June 21st) from Lake George Village (Warren Co.). Incredibly, the participants plan to travel in these craft, replicas of what were used back in 1758, all the way up Lake George - nearly all of the 36 miles - in order to be at the battle site by the next afternoon! The public is invited to attend - the embarkation of the "troops", the skirmish and of course, the Grand Encampment. If you'd like to check the schedule and read more on the subject, here's a link that you might find useful. http://www.poststar.com/entertainment/story01.shtml Enjoy!
