There was a question from Michelle about writing to the Town Clerk of Woodstock to get several death records. Of course you can write to seek the information, but a general request will be difficult to fill and the clerk might say no. You really can't argue because of the time it would take to browse these records. When you have a date, or even just a year, it speeds up the process considerably. The clerk may have these records indexed, but that is no guarantee. Keep in mind that the clerk has the right to charge you $11 per name, whether or not a certicate is found. Some clerks will be less demanding in the fees they charge, but the law allows them the $11. What I would do is write a note to the clerk explaining that you have several names you are seeking but that you aren't sure they will necessarily show up and that you don't have specific dates. Ask what will be charged to search these records. The clerk may be able to help, but she also may say no due to time constraints. I'll stay off my soapbox, but don't forget that most town clerks wear many hats and are overworked and underpaid. You should, particularly with a SASE, at least expect a response. And remember, no death records will show up before 1880.
