For 1850 census records, look under Shandaken. Hardenburg was created between 1850 and 60 out of parts of Shandaken. At least that was my experience tracking my Banks and Barnhart ancestors. As to the Ashokan, you should establish contact with the Ulster County Hall of Records. They did a major microfilming project of the 'takings' related to the reservoir. The records are the legal cases involving the taking of the land for the reservoir. Call the hall of records at (914) 340-3415. Your other contact should be the Town of Olive, where a good chunk of the reservoir is located. Contact the Town Clerk at (914) 657-2320. As to the movement of cemetery stones, etc, I imagine they were moved, but I don't know the details as to where.
