This post is meant only as general information, not as a comment on any posts which have been made. Over the years as a public librarian, I needed to come up with a very simple rule of thumb to illustrate copyright for my staff (and for my own use): "Copyright is being infringed when content is used in a way which would interfere with sales the copyright owner might otherwise make ." Copyright is very complicated, but as a starting point, this has served me well. It's not always an easy call to make, but sales are, after all, what copyright is about.
