Reward - $250 To anyone who can provide proof of parentage of Eleazer HORNBECK. Known facts: 1. He, along with wife Annetje "Hannah" Rosekrans, were in Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY in 1820, 1830 census, and were in Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY in 1840 census. Based on the census records he seems to have been born between 1790-1794. 2. Hannah is the daughter of Moses and Lea Rosekrans of Shawangunk, Ulster County. 3. Eleazer died before April 1849. No will discovered, but in Kingston, NY there is a file in which a claim was made against his very meagre estate by someone Eleazer owed money. Hannah died in Feb. 1864 and is buried in a small rural cemetery in Sundown, Denning, Ulster County. 4. He briefly served in Van Dalfsen's regiment of the war of 1812 (about 3 months in 1814). 4. No land records have been discovered, but his wife and 5 children signed a quit claim deed in May 1849 on a piece of property in Shandaken, Ulster Co. (probably as part of debt against his estate). 5. Children: Jacob b. abt 1817 (m. Sophia Tompkins), Nelly b. abt 1820 (m. John Hinckly), James b. 1823 (m. Lucy), John b. 1830 (m. Mary Jane), Joseph b. 1828 (m. Catherine). 6. Hannah and several of their children joined the Reformed Dutch Church in Grahamsville in 1845. No mention of Eleazer in the church records. Eleazer is mentioned in a few local histories of Neversink and nearby Denning. He is found in "The papers of Reverend J. Milton Haris" on pg 9, and in "historical Sketch of the Reformed Church of Grahamsville" pg 26. In each case the spelling is Eleazer. So who is Eleazer - best guess: There is an Eliza b. 1792 in Rochester, Ulster County, to Petrus Hornbeck and Maria Louw. The location fits well, the time fits well; this Eliza has a grandfather Elisha, thus the name (in various forms) runs in the family; and I find no future record of an Elisa/Eliza as either a male or female. To the first person who can dig up proof of this connection, or another provable connection, contact me and win the reward money. Gary Dufel Feb 20, 1999
