He was in Civil War, rec. pension. >From his will: I nominate & appoint my Wife Fanny & my friend David C. Winfield as Executors of this my last will & testament. [Who was David C. WINFIELD?] The following was copied by Raymond Smith from the final decree in the disposition of the Estate of James Smith, written in a large volume that did not lend itself well to duplication. It is therefore further ordered that said executors invest and keep safely invested the sum of two-thousand four hundred and eleven 82/100 dollars and pay the interest and income arising therefrom to said Fannie Smith for and during her natural life and at upon her death, they divide the said sum between Mary E.S. Canfield, Henry W. Smith, Dell and Royce as assignees of Edwin L. Smith, and Obedience Jane Smith as assignee of James Albert Smith or their legal representatives. Can anyone identify DELL and ROYCE? Were they attorneys? Why was Obedience Jane SMITH appointed assignee of James Albert SMITH? What does this mean? Illness?
