Regarding recent postings about the legality of historians doing genealogical research: The next time a historian or genealogist (or anyone else who should be "in the know") makes a statement and says "it's the law", ask the speaker for the chapter and verse of the law to which they are referring so that you can check it out yourself. If the speaker cannot do this, ask him or her for the basis on which they made the statement. All too often, statements of "it's the law" is based on heresay and is an irresponsible way to give a position credibility. This is in no way meant to cause a speaker embarrassment....the intent is to prevent further dissemination of a non-fact, much like virus hoaxes. Sincerely, Ginny Byron vbyron@ulster.net
