> It says that Susanna Merritt & William Legg had Banns called in the >Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston in January 1677. I can't find any trace of banns or marriage in the Hoes book. >Hello again Peggy Hi Richard, >How Curious! I don't have a Hoes here to check - do they list Banns of marriages not performed there? It lists cases where the marriage was performed by a JP. But William & Susanna don't appear until their first child comes along. > I can only add that neither was a member of the church. (from Membership Old Dutch Church Kingston 1659-1809 $30) Hmmm. How odd. They had most of the kids baptized there. And I noted that they never had any sponsors or witnesses! Must have been unsociable. :) BTW, it is wonderful what variations the Domines could come up with for Legg! >Here's news - from Olde Ulster Vol II page 235: >At Shout's Court Any idea what that was? The article cites "Court Records" and gives the story. Was it a civil court or some sort of church court? > January 27th 1677, Ah! I have a xerox from a yellowed newspaper. :( There is an extra space between January & 7 - must have been a 2 there. So, the Banns "the following Sunday" could have been in Feb. But still nothing in Hoes. >"Whereas, as Thoomas Mattys and Susan Merritt's banns were being >called - why has she prevented the banns? >ANSWER- That she has changed her mind. >They there in the presence of the court released each other from their >promises. >At the request of themselves William Leecq and Susan Merritt are >permitted to marry and their banns will be called next Sunday" >END Neat! The article tells the story, but not with quotes. Has "(Van Keuren)" after "Thomas Matthy." >THAT is a mention of them and their banns - but not that they were >called in January - best I could do - I hope it helps. Thanks. I plan to type this article into my computer, as it is difficult to read. Might you want to put it on the web page? Or would there be a copyright problem? I don't know what the Old Dutch Post-Star was/is. Gives info on descendants of William & Susanna. With lots of errors in dates, as compared to Hoes. :( I do hope it is correct about one thing - that the Leggs were Scottish. I have been hoping to find some Scots on the tree. <G> Guess my next quest is trying to trace William & Susanna! Btw, I went to a lecture by Hank Jones on Saturday. Nice to meet someone - and in Florida - who knows several of my ancestors better than I do. :) He pinned down my Miller/Mullers for me.
