***I am looking for any mention of the surname FREDERICKS in Ulster County pre-1735, and for any information on the "Kuyket" (spelled innumerable ways) location, on Frederick Hussey land, near Kingston.*** Sylvester, on p 88 of his HISTORY OF ULSTER COUNTY, says Keket/Kekyt/Kekuyt/Kuyket was "near Kingston, overlooking it, so that Kingston can be seen from Kuyket" (Sylvester's spelling). This location is of interest to me, because the land the first Manuel Gonsales Duc bought from Frederick Hussey in 1696 was south of Kingston, "over the Roundout, under the mountains called Frederick Hussey's Hills, and the Gonsales-Duc family married into my Fredericks family of interest who were also from "Kekyt". The Fredericks and the Gonsales-Ducs must have been neighbors in "Kuyket" and later in Nine Partners, and their families intermarried. I have worked for many years on a man named Le Meyer Every, who is seen in many variations of name and spelling, and sometimes as Meyer or Nehemiah Every or Avery. This man married a woman named Dorcas Fredericks. Their first known son, Le Meyer, Jr., was baptised in Kingston DRC in 1736, with sponsors from the Tarrytown area for this baptism (and for others). I have estimated the DOB for this Le Meyer Every at circa 1710. Both Le Meyer and his wife remain unidentified, despite much research effort. LeMeyer EVERY and Dorcas FREDERICKS later lived on the Nine Partners Patent in northern Dutchess County, and when she was widowed and remarried, Dorcas married JAMES AUCHMOODIE and returned to Ulster County. Their records are in New Paltz. I am interested in the following marriage records, that name the place of birth of two men surnamed FREDERICKS Records of the Poughkeepsie Dutch Reformed Church "Peter Frederick born in KEKYT and Rebekka Edwart born Nine Partners, living there, were married on 27 August 1752." "Gilbert Frederick born in KEKYT and Katrina Eddwaet born in Nine Partners and living there, were married on 28 September 1754." These Edward sisters were daughters of JAN EDWARDS and MARITIE GONSALES-DUC, whose family was also from the Hussey Hills area, near Kingston, and later went to Nine Partners Patent. That these Fredericks brothers related to my DORCAS FREDERICKS I am fairly certain, but how they related I have not yet determined. I thought at first they might have been her younger brothers, but I have a nagging feeling that DORCAS FREDERICKS might have been born with a different surname, and married first a man named Fredericks, and that these Fredericks brothers were her sons, born in Ulster County, where she then remarried my ancestor Le Meyer Every (no marriage record known), their first known son being a rough contemporary of these Fredericks brothers. On the "January 17, 1717/18 census for Dutchess County North Ward of Inhabitants, Sojourners and Free Holders of Dutchess County" appears "Hans Adam Fredericks". The names Johan/John and Adam were used by descendants of the Fredericks/Edwards marriages, but unfortunately I can find nothing about this "Hans Adam Fredericks". Any help from those with access to Ulster County early source material would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Sharilyn Whitaker
According to Alf Evers final book: Kingston, City on the Hudson-- pg 47, "..the Kingston hilltop to [Kingston's] south called the Kijkuit, or Lookout from which enemies approaching down the converging valleys might be oberved....now called Golden Hill." pg 253: "To the south of the old stockage area a hill long known as the Kijkuit, or Lookout, from its use in early Native and Dutch days as a place from which approaching Native or white enemies might be observed was divided into building lots advertised to be sold for from fifty to two hundred fifty dollars, many commanding views of the Village of Kingston, the lush Esopus Valley and the blue Catskill mountains. The old Dutch name of the hill was rejected and a new one--Golden Hill-- more appropriate to the tone of the times, substituted." Hope this helps.
