    1. [NY-ULSTER] DEWITT Family Photograph

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Ten Eyck DEWITT which was taken at the T. D. Lewis Studio in Kingston, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Ten Eyck appearing to be in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has already written "My Father" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following census information regarding the family: 1870 census of Kingston, NY: Newkerk DEWITT, age 53, Works in Tannery, born NY Martina DEWITT, age 47, born NY Ten Eyck DEWITT, age 14, born NY Mary C. DEWITT, age 11, born NY Retina HUMEN, age 12, born Germany 1880 census of Hurley, NY: Christopher DEWITT, age 29, a Farmer, born NY, parents born NY Anna DEWITT, wife, age 28, Keeping House, born NY, parents born NY Ten Eyck P. DEWITT, brother, age 23, a Farmer, born NY, parents born NY Rachel A. SMITH, servant, age 40, a Servant, born NY, parents born NY I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or if you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Shelley: What an exciting thing to find. I have a lot of DeWitts and TenEycks on my VanKeuren side, so I did a quick check. I have a TenEyck DeWitt who was the son of Garritt DeWitt and Catharine TenEyck, hence his first name. He in turn married Catharine Newkirk, and while I had not yet fleshed out this family, the names, time and location all fit, so I'm guessing this is the right family. I wouldn't presume to ask for the original, but would love to have a copy if you have the ability to scan it. I wish more of my old family pictures from the late 1800s actually had names on the back!
