Good Morning, It's snowing more than I'd like here in PA this fine March morning and I'm puttering. So, I thought, after reading recent email, that I'd throw out a question that isn't terribly important but has been in the back of my mind on and off for a while. There are several old given names I encounter frequently in my census research that always stir up a little curiosity. So, I thought I'd see if anyone here knows anything about them or where to find out. One is a female name: Permelia. The other is a male name: Tunis. There are others but I've seen these fairly frequently. I'm interested in the derivation of given names. I find it interesting and entertaining. My name is Lorraine, from the French province, derived, apparently from Lotharinga, named for Lothair it's king, 855-869. Name books list the name as meaning famous in war or battle. How people get their names, mine came from a construction shovel (Thew Lorraine construction equipment company) my parents saw on the way to visit one of my aunts otherwise I'd be Cathy Louisep; what language the name came from and the meaning of the name I find very interesting. Anyone else have any interesting name stories or know anything about the names, Permelia and Tunis? I think Tunis is Dutch but what does it mean? Does anyone know any good name sites that include old names? Lorraine O'Dell
