My research confirms that I have both Lane and Whispell ancestors who settled there "way back when". Eventually both families migrated to northeastern Pennsylvania (Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, PA) I've seen that name Shandaken for quite a few years, but I've got no concept of what the area looks like, either back in the late 1700's or today. Is it rural or is it city? When I think of Woodstock, I think of the "hippie" music festival held there years ago and if I remember correctly I believe that was in a farmer's pastures. I'd really love to have some insight into the make up of the area. For example, my ancestor, Gilbert Lane, Sr. was born in White Plains, Westchester Co, NY in 1737 and he died 23 January 1833 at age 95 and was buried in Olive, Ulster Co, NY. In 1790 he lived in Mabletown, Ulster Co where he was a tavern keeper from 1793 to 1795 and by 1799 he was employed as an overseer of highways in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY. In 1810 and 1820 he lived in Shandaken. It was not until 1832 that Gilbert Lane, Sr. who served in the 2nd Regiment, Dutchess Co, NY with Brinckerhoff's Regiment during the Revolutionary War, applied for a military pension. By then he would have been 94 years old...he died the following year. Gilbert Lane, Sr's son, Gilbert Jr. first married about 1797 in Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY. I do not know the details or reasons, death or divorce perhaps, but Gilbert Jr. married a second time in 1802 again in Woodstock to Dorcas Hines who was born about 1799 in Connecticut. Gilbert Lane Jr. died in 1845 in Falls Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. His wife, Dorcas Hines Lane died after 1850 in Falls Twp, Wyoming Co, PA. Some of Gilbert Jr.'s nine known children were born in Ulster Co, NY with others being born in Tioga Co, NY. My great-great-great grandfather, Gilbert Jr.'s son, David B. Lane, was born in Nichols, Tioga Co, NY 15 Jun 1820. But then running along parallel with the Lane family in Shandaken, Ulster Co, NY is also the Whispell family. I've found references to Conrad Whispell, Jane Whispell, and William Whispell in Shandaken via a listing of Ulster Co, NY will testators index. Some of the NY Whispells migrated to Wyoming County and are buried here including Eliza Whispell, (1841-1890). I'm trying to learn as much as possible about Delia (or Adelia) Whispell, (1862-1930) daughter of Peter Whispell who was born 14 Jan 1836 in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY and died 7 Dec 1908 in Wyoming Co, PA.. I believe Delia Whispell (Rosengrant possibly a first marriage?) Decker who was married to George Decker (1861-1927) is the mother of my grandmother, Lillian Jane Rosengrant Decker (1883-1957). Delia Whispell, born in NY made her way to Wyoming Co, PA (and I'd love to know the story) where her daughter, Lillian Rosengrant Decker married Clarence David Lane, in 1902 - the grandson of David B. Lane and the great! - grandson of Gilbert Lane, Jr. and wife, Dorcas Hines Lane - who also came to Wyoming County, PA from Ulster Co, NY. I'd like to know more about Shandaken both then and now so I might be in a better position to research both the history as well as current historical societies, etc. I'd even like to know if it's a relatively quiet place today where a good old country girl could possibly drive....or is it bustling four lane highways where a person like me would get killed traveling? My little town only has a couple of red lights - and most of them are new within the past couple of years. Can you fill me in? Sylvia
