    1. Re: Wispel/Whispell / Lane / Rosengrant / Decker
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lane, Whispell, Rosengrant, Decker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5RB.2ACE/1099.3 Message Board Post: Irene, I wanted to share information that I posted on the Rosengrant board to Betty, as I believe we are all looking for information on some of the same families that originated in Ulster County, NY and some of the surrounding counties that eventually migrated to Wyoming County in Pennsylvania. Betty, Thanks for trying to help me figure things out. Since I received your email with the mention of Peter Whispel(l), I've been searching the various census years particularly in Clinton Twp, Wyoming County. My father, born Charles Tripp Lane, son of Clarence David Lane and Lillian Jane Rosengrant Decker Lane was born there on Bunker Hill in Sept 1907. I felt I made some progress, particularly in the 1900 Census of Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, PA - page 21 (shown as page A56 on the Genealogy.com image) where I found the George Decker family living next door to widower Peter Whispell: Decker, George head w m May 1860 41 Married 15 years owns house, farm laborer born PA, father & mother born PA Decker Adelia, wife, w f Mar 1862 age 38, Married 15 years, has borne 10 children, 9 living as of 1900 She was born NY, mother and father born NY (nee Whispell, I believe) Decker, Rosa W. daughter, 19, born Aug 1880 Decker, Mahalia, 13, daughter, born July 1886 Decker, Nathaniel, 12, son, born May 1888 Decker, Mable, 8, daughter, born Oct 1881 Decker, Norman E., 6, son, born Mar 1883 Decker, Effie H., 2, daughter, born Dec. 1897 Whispell, Peter, head, w, m, 58, born May 1842 widowed born NY, father and mother both born NY Whispell, Suzie, daughter, 17, born June 1883 single, born Penna, father and mother born NY Then from the 1910 Pennsylvania Census, Clinton Twp, Wyoming Co, Roll 1433, Book 1, Pages 12, 14, and 15: Page 12 - Bunker Hill Road area: Lane, Clarence D, (David) head, m w 27 married 8 years owns farm born PA, father and mother born PA (Clarence Lane was born 12 Aug 1883 and is the son of Charles Tripp Lane (1849-1928) and Mary McKinney Dixon Lane, and grandson of David B. Lane (1820-1884) and Mary Ann Walters Lane (1823-1899). his wife, Lane, Lillian J. (my grandmother) 26, married 8 years, has borne 6 children, 5 of whom are living by 1910. Lillian J(Jane) Rosengrant Decker - according to research of a Lane cousin - census states she was born in PA and her mother and father were born in PA. Again in the 1920 census her father and mother are shown as being born in PA. Also listed in the 1910 census are the children of Clarence and Lillian Rosengrant Decker born to that date: Lane, Ronald F., Son, 7- Lane, Josephine, Daughter, 5 - Lane, Mary, Daughter, 4 - Lane Charles Tripp, 3 - my father, who eventually took the middle name of Sherman as his mail and that of his grandfather, also Charles Tripp Lane was constantly being mixed up - and Lane, Ethel G, Daughter, On Page 15 Clinton Twp, 1910: Decker, George 48 Delia C. 47 Nathaniel 20 Norman 16 Effie H. 13 Fred F. 10 (born since the 1900 census) On Page 14, Clinton Twp, 1910: Whispell, Frank 40 Annie 30 wife Lena 7 daughter Now what leaves me confused, if my grandmother, Lillian Rosengrant Decker Lane's mother is in fact Delia (or Adelia) C. Whispell there is a discrepany as Delia is listed as being born in New York state. Grandmother via the census says her mother was born in PA. The best I know right now is that George and Delia C. (Whispell) Decker are buried in the Dixon Cemetery, US Route 6 East from Tunkhannock, Wyoming Co, PA. I've visited the cemetery as a child with my father, and more recently with my children. You know when you are a child you really have little concept of who you are "visiting". But more recently on my visit, I also found that there were Rosengrants buried in the Dixon Cemetery: Mahala Rosengrant Van Allen (1895-1956). Another oddity is that the Lane's came to Wyoming County, PA via Rye, Westchester Co, NY later Connecticut Colony (about 1640) Colony then by 1833 a g, g,g grandfather, Gilbert Lane. Sr. died at age 95 in Olive, Ulster Co., NY By 1762 he had migrated to Dutchess Co, NY and in 1790 he lived in Marbletown, Ulster Co, NY and by 1797 and 1799 he was in Woodstock, Ulster Co, NY. In 1810, Gilbert Lane Sr. was in SHANKAKEN, Ulster Co, NY and his son, David B. Lane was born on 15 June 1820 in Tioga, Tioga County, New York State. It would almost make you wonder if the Whispell's migrated along the same trails. And it would also make a person wonder what caused them to move ever forward into Wyoming County, PA. I hope to learn more about all the families - Lane, Rosengrant, Whispell, Decker...as time goes by. Any help from any direction would be appreciated. It does seem as if the entire lineage is a very tangled web to unravel. Thanks for your help. Sylvia
