Her name was Johanna or Hannah Soper, and she later moved with her mother and uncle to Monmouth County NJ, which is where she shows up in the 1880 Census. I found the Soper famly in the 1850 census in New Paltz with father David, mother Catharine and children Richard, Abraham and Rachel. I have found baptism records for Abraham and Richard also in New Paltz. The Soper family pedigree is well documented on both the paternal & maternal sides (especially the Hasbroucks) , but I haven't found any record of Johanna Soper's birth or christening. I'm wondering if it was because she was illegitimate? (I don' t know, I'm just guessing) Her marriage certificate lists her mother as Rachel Soper and no father, which is why I think that she might be illegitimate. Another famly rumor has it that she was part Indian...... so an illegimate, half indian ggrandmother? I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to go from here. Karen
