Thomas Dunn jr's. widow, Amy Lockwood Dunn lived right next to James in the 1790 census of New Paltz. Thomas was dead in 1790 and I believe he was killed in a battle with Gen. Clinton on the Hudson during the revolution. Since you had an older Thomas Dunn it would make him the prime candidate for their father. This information is in " A history of Ulster County" by Sylvester. In the second book of that work, and the way I got it, Thomas Dunn was resident in marborough in 1760. Robert and Joseph who lived in New Hurley (very close to Marlborough) had statistics in that town as well.James and John were about 8 and 6 yrs old at that time. Joseph would have been older since he married Mary Wikham in 1766. Others believe it was a Robert Dunn since admittedly the name Robert was used incessantly. The above info is the closest I have encountered to proof. My Unc! le Marquis said we are descendent from one of five Irish Immigrant brothers whose descendants are spread out all over the country. Hugh Dunn in New Jersey was one of five brothers but never been able to relate our family to him. These Dunn brothers were escaping religious persecution. James Dunn was known as the "Duelist" as you point out. That designation comes from an article called " A History of the Town of Lloyd". I don't know why he was called the Duelist, but then again, it is rather obvious. James married Ann Lane around the start of the revolution. The Lanes were in the New Paltz area. The most likely parent would be Alexander Lane since he was in the area and earlier in Marlborough. Other Lanes were their as well who may have been the parent. Any info you can provide on Solomon would be appreciated. I have his children (think I have his children) in the census records. Solomon married Maria Terwilliger and I am blessed with a great deal of Terwilliger and Freer blood. I am also interested in Uriah Dunn son of Sarah Drake and Robert Dunn of New Hurley. Uriah is probably a cousin and he married Leah Terwilliger. Feel free to e-mail me since transfer of the records will be simpler.
