    3. Grit, My Great Grandmother, Mary Frances Terwilliger (1853 - 1934) married a Shaffer (presumably James but may be Joseph) in 1868/69. He was killed in a train accident (in Kingston?) before his first child was born. In the 1870 census of Ulster county, Tuthill Post office area, Mary was again living with her father Evert Terwilliger and her son James who was 10 months old. The census taker did not record James's last name - he drew a line for surnames of Mary and James. Looks like this: Terwilliger, Evert ------- , Mary -------, James Only family oral history gives us the name Shaffer. Evert died about 1871. Mary then married a man named Burns/Barnes. Barnes was suppose to be his name for boxing matches. She had more children with Mr. Burns (again I do not kow his first name). The children were William (1876 - 1878), George, and Joseph (1871 - 1934). James Shaffer supposedly took the Burns last name. I have never found this family in the 1880 census. By 1882 Mary was married to a Henry Terwilliger and they had a daughter Mary Caroline aka Carrie. In 1889 she married Peter Stoothoff and they had three more children, John Elmer, Oscar Edward, and Gladys Marie. The strange part of this story is that I can not find Mary with any of the children that she had before the Stoothoff children. I would love to know the first name of James Shaffer's father and what happened to James. Does he have any descendants? This would be all that I have on the Shaffer line and I know that is not much help to you. Would you possible have a James born in 1869???
