    3. Hello, Does anyone know if the Shawangunk Reformed Church dated from the 1750's still stands and does it have a church grave yard? And if I might also ask, does a compiled listing of the graves exist? I was interested in the Benson and Elmendorph burials that might well be there. Edward Otte

    1. [NY-ULSTER] LostCousins.com - uses 1880 US census to connect researchers with same lines
    2. Liane Treiman
    3. I thought I'd pass this along -- my apologies if it has been previously posted. LostCousins is a site that been active for a while, using UK and Canadian census records to connect people researching the same lines -- lost cousins, in fact. Beginning this month (Feb.) the site supports the US 1880 census. Basically, you enter 1880 census data for your ancestors (and their kin) on a really simple form. The data includes National Archives reel # and census page # (easily found at www.familysearch.org ). By matching up people who've input identical info, the site links folks with similar research interests. The site is mostly free -- subscribers can initiate contacts and get an extended matching service (allied families / marriage). At the moment, there doesn't appear to even be a way to subscribe paying with US funds! If you use the link below to register, I'm told you'll get free 'subscriber' status through April 2007. http://www.lostcousins.com/?ref=1776LC921166 I hope some folks give it a try -- I'm always looking for new cousins! 2. Note: I am posting this abstract of a will of Nathaniel Vail because he is not mentioned in the Orange Co. will book. I found this on the NEHGS site that is listing abstracts of some NY wills: Delaware County, it appears, pgs 142 145. I am interested in the Vails because of their relationship with other Orange co. families, particularly the Carpenters. Please note that Nathaniel is apparently not married, but his will shows some relationships. 1. [NY-ULSTER] Dorothy Orpha Lane
    2. RE: E. K. Henderson looking for Dorothy Orpha Lane. I am also a Lane researcher and I did a little checking on Ancestry and found Orpha Lane, age approximately 14, living in Kingston, New York in the 1900 US Federal Census in the household of Hattie (I think it is Nettie and the transcriber put Hattie) Lane (a widow) and having siblings, Edith approximately 18 years of age, Oscar approximately 17 years of age and Addie approximately 12 years of age. The information states that Hattie is age 45 and had 6 children and 5 are living. It looks like they were living on Wall Street at the time of the census. Hope this helps. Sonia

    1. [NY-ULSTER] Need a local guide
    2. Stephanie Martineau
    3. In my quest to identify my 4th great grandmother, the unknown wife of Thomas Burgess (1744/5-1786) I have been doing a lot of deed research. I have deeds for several families in the area of Lattingtown/Lloyd, including Burgess, Miller, Potter, Ransom, Lester, and Carpenter. I think that the parcels lie north of Chapel Hill Road, abutting or near the home of Peleg Ransom. (On a map drawn in 1798). I am trying to map the old deeds using Deed Mapper, but that effort is tough given the property descriptions in some of the deeds (for instance, only the names of the adjoining landowners, which changed over time, of course). In the future I hope to be able to tour the properties owned by my ancestors and see the title reports. I am wondering if there is anyone in the Ulster county area who is really familiar with the history of that neighborhood and might be a guide for me. I am also interested in the Carpenter Burying Ground, which even Poucher could not transcribe due to the age and condition of the stones. I am going to Ulster county on a research trip soon, and I'd like to touch bases with someone who might be able to help me with this property "survey." There are so many knowledgeable people on the mailing list, and I hope you can suggest some names to me. Thanks, Stephanie Martineau Researching Adams, Airs/Ayers, Brewer/Brower, Burgess, Carpenter, Hull, Jones, Ketchum, Perkins, Ransom, Smith, Woodruff

    3. Where/how do I get a copy of a birth and/or death certificate for someone who was born in 1880 and died in 1958. Also, I only know the years of birth and death (they are on his headstone) I do not know the month or year. Will this prevent me from being able to access the information? Also, does anyone know how long funeral homes keep information on file? The funeral parlor which buried him is still open. 3. NYS started civil registration of birth and death records in late 1880s and it took a few years to all the counties/cities to fully conform to the new law. You can obtain certificates from the city/town clerk where the person was born, married and/or died or you can get one through NYS Health Dept at: http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/ -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
