Greetings Ulster County List: Here is an obituary from the Kripple Bush (Kripplebush) Methodist Church records compiled in the late 1800s, early 1900s. If you have questions or comments about the any of the other people mentioned in this obit, please change the subject line of your e-mail accordingly, thank you. Also, please note that the Fairview Cemetery is on Pine Bush Road, a few miles north of Kripplebush--not to be confused with the Pine Bush that is in Orange County, NY. Hiram Wager, Kripple Bush Methodist Church Records, Book 2, Page 108, pasted copy of Obituary, Death date: November 17, 1894: “Kripple Bush: Hiram WAGER, a former resident of Kripple Bush, died near the village of High Falls on Saturday evening, November 17th, after a short illness. He was born April 4th, 1847, and was a son of David WAGER, who died April 15th, 1863, and Sally PALEN, who died April 9th, 1852. Johannis WAGER, the great ancestor of the Wager family in Ulster County, came from Dutchess County, it is supposed some time between 1790 and 1800, and purchased land on which the present residence of Jacob E. HORNBEEK in this village, and on which is now erected the store of Henry TEN HAGEN, formerly the hotel of John ECKERT, deceased. Johannis WAGER, soon after erecting a house in this village and living here a few years, sold the property to Jacob ECERT, who came from Esopus, and about the year 1805 bought the property now owned by Daniel D. SMITH from the Trustees of Marbletown, about a half a mile north of this village where he died June 9th, 1837, and Margaret MILLER, his wife, died February 28, 1853. Both are buried in the old graveyard belonging to the Methodist church. The land on which the public school stood in this village was deeded on March 25th, 1816 to Johannis WAGER, John TEAS, and Joseph SMITH, by Wessel Broadhead, Peter Jansen and Isaac B. BLOOM, Trustees of Marbletown. The Wager family has been active in the affairs of the church and town, and is still one of the prominent families of Dutchess county also. Hiram WAGER was highly respected by his many acquaintances and his death is greatly regretted. His funeral was held in the Reformed church at High Falls on Monday afternoon at two o’clock, Rev. Herman Hageman officiating. The remains were buried in the cemetery at Pine Bush.” With warm regards, Marilyn Hough Stern KrippleBush, NY mhoughstern@aol.com ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

If posted to any other lists, please copy: seamus@nycap.rr.com B. The largest project the Troy Irish Genealogy Society has undertaken so far is the automation of the Rensselaer County Marriage Index. This 10 Volume Marriage Index of Rensselaer County marriages, from 1908 to 1935, has over 60,000 names. Volume I (January 1908-April 1913) with its 5,000 marriages and 10,000 names, was added to the TIGS website on June 13, 2006. Volume II, (April 1913-May 1918) with another 5,000 marriages and 10,000 names was added to the TIGS website on January 12, 2007. Volume III, (May 1918-April 1920) with another 2,000 marriages and 4,000 names has now been added to the TIGS website. C. You can view these marriage records by going to the Troy Irish Genealogy website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nytigs/ and click on TIGS PROJECTS. It should be noted that these records, like most of the TIGS data series, cover the general population in the area and are NOT restricted to Irish surnames. D. If you are researching relatives with a RENSSELAER COUNTY, NY area connection, you will be interested in these three on-line, name searchable, records of 24,000 names of local residents who were married in Rensselaer County, New York. If you live in a nearby county or even further away, you might want to check out the data base. Take a look at the data base, you never know what you will find. You may even find an earlier marriage for your relative that you never knew about. E. In order to appreciate the marriage index on the TIGS website, you need an understanding of the set up of the Marriage Index book at the County Clerk's Office. All marriages, along with complete detailed information on the bride and groom and their parents, were first entered into the Record of Marriages Book. Brides and Grooms names were then posted to the Marriage INDEX Book which served as a locating device to find the complete record in the Record of Marriages Book itself. Without the Marriage Index, you could not easily locate a name in the Record of Marriages Book. The Marriage Index Book has SEPARATE pages of data for Brides and SEPARATE pages of data for Grooms. For example, for the letter "A", there is a page of Brides names beginning with "A" and ANOTHER page of Grooms names beginning with the letter "A". The data on each page is limited to the first and last name, a page reference number, a marriage license number and the date of the marriage. Names of SPOUSES are NOT linked together in the index. The only linkage to the spouse in the Marriage Index is the marriage number. F. The TIGS data base has greatly improved the usefulness of the Marriage Index as follows: 1. By using the marriage number, the TIGS Marriage Index now links the names of the brides AND the grooms on ONE LINE of data, thus providing a much more useful research tool. 2. Some entries in the Record of Marriages Book were never posted to the Marriage Index Book. These missing records were identified by TIGS workers and added to the TIGS Marriage Index. 3. A number of records in the Marriage Index showed only INITIALS for either the bride or the groom. In many cases TIGS workers were able to determine the ACTUAL names from the original source documents and added them to the TIGS data base. 4. Several records for grooms names were originally posted to the brides pages of the Marriage Index Book and a number of brides names were posted to the grooms pages of the Marriage Index Book. TIGS workers corrected these errors in developing the TIGS index. 5. A number of transcribing errors when the Marriage Index Book was created were discovered by TIGS workers and corrected. 6. Last but not least, the TIGS Marriage Index is in strict alphabetical order unlike the original index. For example, on the original index, you may have four or more lengthy pages of Grooms names ALL beginning with the first two letters "Ma" and in no order whatsoever. G. In using the TIGS Marriage Index data base, keep in mind the following: 1. Handwriting in some cases was very difficult to read and there could be some problems with spelling. 2. It appears that all of the postings to the Vol. III Marriage Index Book show a office filing date instead of the date of the marriage. The entry in the Marriage Book itself, however, will show the date of the marriage. 3. Remember, the TIGS index is a transcription of the Marriage Index Book and NOT the Record of Marriages Book itself. It is always possible that the original source documents, the Affidavit For License To Marry, the Certificate And Record of Marriage and the Certificate of Consent, (for minors), were not posted correctly to the Record of Marriages Book, or that entries in the Record of Marriages Book were not posted correctly to the Marriage Index Book, or that TIGS transcribers misread the handwriting. If there is a question on any entry, the actual source documents at the County Clerk's Office would have to be referenced. H. In working on Volume 3 of the Marriage Index it was discovered that none of the original records could be located. Extensive searching has yet to locate these records. Photocopies of the original Volume 3 marriage documents, therefore, are not available. For marriage numbers from 10000 to 12000 in Volume 3, the only item available will be a photocopy of the full detailed record that was posted to the Marriage Record Book FROM the original documents. The County Clerk's Office has agreed to provide a photocopy of the Marriage Record Book entry for those names where the original documents are not available. This photocopy WILL show the correct date of marriage. In order to copy the record, this very heavy and large book (13 x 19) has to be moved from the basement vault and taken to a photocopier on the first floor I. The TIGS website has a PRINTABLE FORM that can be used to request copies from the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office. Mailing instructions and fees (only $5.00) are on the request form. There are SEPARATE request forms for Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3. J. The original pages of the Marriage Index Book were scanned by TIGS members. The resulting pdf files were then sent to the volunteers working on the project as an attachment to an email, along with an Excel spreadsheet for data entry. This extensive data base was made possible by over 30 volunteers from all over the United States. Volunteer names are shown on the TIGS website. K. The next step in the Marriage Index Project will be Volume 4 & 5 which are in one combined index. These 2 volumnes cover another 4,000 records and 8,000 names. If you want to be added to the list of volunteer transcribers, send an email off list to: seamus@nycap.rr.com with your name, address and telephone number. You will be contacted when work on Volume 4 & 5 starts shortly. L. TIGS would like to hear from you if this marriage index was helpful in your family research. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

Greetings Ulster County List, Later today I will start posting a lot of obituaries from the late 1800s and very early 1900s for people who had some kind of a connection to the KrippleBush Methodist Church in the hamlet of Kripplebush, Ulster County, NY. I plan to post them one at a time so the subject line of the e-mail will be very clear. Would someone please let me know if I need to do anything "special" to have these postings go to the Ulster message board? These obits are from the local paper (perhaps the Kingston Daily Freeman?) and are pasted into four ledger books. Also in these books are handwritten births, baptisms, marriages and deaths, as well as meeting minutes and other information relating to the operation of the church. Even though the actual church building was not built until 1857, there are many records earlier than that, a few going back to the late 1700s. The person responsible for compiling these old ledgers was Elmer Wilklow, a Notary Public and an extremely dedicated man with a wonderful attention to detail plus a real interest in the church and the history of the area. (I think that Mr. Wilklow probably wrote most of the obituaries too, although his name isn't included in the newsclippings.) I am just finishing up transcribing some of the information from these books into what will be a 150th Anniversary Celebration Booklet for the church. The information included in many of these obits are what I call a genealogists' dream. I am thankful that these books survived for the past 100 years! One more thing about the subject line, since there are many different names in these obits, I suggest if you are commenting on a name other than the person who died, you change the subject line to reflect it. I'll probably include a reminder in each posting. Enjoy! Hi Marty, My Terwilliger starts with Solomon Terwilliger and Rachel Ostrander who lived in Ulster County, NY. They had a son Harmanus who married Magdalena Veeder on 22 Dec 1748 in Schenectady. Harmanus had moved to Schenectady before 1748.All of my information is about this family. > I have been researching the Crissey/Chrisey family of Alexander and Elizabeth Crissey. Their second daughter Sarah E married Augustus Terwilliger on July 4, 1863. I understand he is the son of Winfield J Terwilliger and Ann Decler. I also understand he later married Elsie Bensimer on Aug 29, 1885 after Sarah died on Feb 27, 1879. Is Augustus related to any of your Terwilligers? Do you have any information on him or his wives. Richard
Grit, My Great Grandmother, Mary Frances Terwilliger (1853 - 1934) married a Shaffer (presumably James but may be Joseph) in 1868/69. He was killed in a train accident (in Kingston?) before his first child was born. In the 1870 census of Ulster county, Tuthill Post office area, Mary was again living with her father Evert Terwilliger and her son James who was 10 months old. The census taker did not record James's last name - he drew a line for surnames of Mary and James. Looks like this: Terwilliger, Evert ------- , Mary -------, James Only family oral history gives us the name Shaffer. Evert died about 1871. Mary then married a man named Burns/Barnes. Barnes was suppose to be his name for boxing matches. She had more children with Mr. Burns (again I do not kow his first name). The children were William (1876 - 1878), George, and Joseph (1871 - 1934). James Shaffer supposedly took the Burns last name. I have never found this family in the 1880 census. By 1882 Mary was married to a Henry Terwilliger and they had a daughter Mary Caroline aka Carrie. In 1889 she married Peter Stoothoff and they had three more children, John Elmer, Oscar Edward, and Gladys Marie. The strange part of this story is that I can not find Mary with any of the children that she had before the Stoothoff children. I would love to know the first name of James Shaffer's father and what happened to James. Does he have any descendants? This would be all that I have on the Shaffer line and I know that is not much help to you. Would you possible have a James born in 1869??? Good morning We do not know who were Elijah's siblings. He is our brick wall. What we do have is a direct male descent of Elijah's who has a 37 marker DNA report. Is there a possibility that you have a male direct line Conklin from Joseph that could and would take the test? Then we might both have a road to explore together. I have been following your messages on Hugo Freer, New Paltz, Terwilliger and Huguenots with great interest. First let me say I do not have a Freer connection at least not yet. All of you have mentioned connections to Terwilliger families.
