    1. [NY-ULSTER] DEWITT Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Ten Eyck DEWITT which was taken at the T. D. Lewis Studio in Kingston, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Ten Eyck appearing to be in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has already written "My Father" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following census information regarding the family: 1870 census of Kingston, NY: Newkerk DEWITT, age 53, Works in Tannery, born NY Martina DEWITT, age 47, born NY Ten Eyck DEWITT, age 14, born NY Mary C. DEWITT, age 11, born NY Retina HUMEN, age 12, born Germany 1880 census of Hurley, NY: Christopher DEWITT, age 29, a Farmer, born NY, parents born NY Anna DEWITT, wife, age 28, Keeping House, born NY, parents born NY Ten Eyck P. DEWITT, brother, age 23, a Farmer, born NY, parents born NY Rachel A. SMITH, servant, age 40, a Servant, born NY, parents born NY I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or if you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Hi Elsie, She is really gorgeous! That picture of her sleeping is way beyond beautiful. You are one lucky grandma! Still no certain news for me. I am begining to think they are waiting to tell me at Christmas. Fingers crossed that all will be well. A girl would be nice, but any baby would fill me wil purest joy. Sounds like you have a wonderful life! After Christmas I will try to research how best to look into early Ulster land records. Who knows, maybe the LDS have filmed them. Happy holidays! And again many thanks for your help. Sharilyn

    3. Elsie, I must say this information left me laughing, because I thought I had collected all the umpty variant spellings for this place. "Kijkuit", however, is a new one to me! Knowing the name "Golden Hill" is a huge help. I have never found that reference before, and perhaps this will lead to more new information. Many and sincere thanks for your help. 1. [NY-ULSTER] Keket/Kekyt/Kekuyt-HUSSEY land, re FREDERICKS & GONSALES-DUC
    2. Sharilyn Whitaker
    3. ***I am looking for any mention of the surname FREDERICKS in Ulster County pre-1735, and for any information on the "Kuyket" (spelled innumerable ways) location, on Frederick Hussey land, near Kingston.*** Sylvester, on p 88 of his HISTORY OF ULSTER COUNTY, says Keket/Kekyt/Kekuyt/Kuyket was "near Kingston, overlooking it, so that Kingston can be seen from Kuyket" (Sylvester's spelling). This location is of interest to me, because the land the first Manuel Gonsales Duc bought from Frederick Hussey in 1696 was south of Kingston, "over the Roundout, under the mountains called Frederick Hussey's Hills, and the Gonsales-Duc family married into my Fredericks family of interest who were also from "Kekyt". The Fredericks and the Gonsales-Ducs must have been neighbors in "Kuyket" and later in Nine Partners, and their families intermarried. I have worked for many years on a man named Le Meyer Every, who is seen in many variations of name and spelling, and sometimes as Meyer or Nehemiah Every or Avery. This man married a woman named Dorcas Fredericks. Their first known son, Le Meyer, Jr., was baptised in Kingston DRC in 1736, with sponsors from the Tarrytown area for this baptism (and for others). I have estimated the DOB for this Le Meyer Every at circa 1710. Both Le Meyer and his wife remain unidentified, despite much research effort. LeMeyer EVERY and Dorcas FREDERICKS later lived on the Nine Partners Patent in northern Dutchess County, and when she was widowed and remarried, Dorcas married JAMES AUCHMOODIE and returned to Ulster County. Their records are in New Paltz. I am interested in the following marriage records, that name the place of birth of two men surnamed FREDERICKS Records of the Poughkeepsie Dutch Reformed Church "Peter Frederick born in KEKYT and Rebekka Edwart born Nine Partners, living there, were married on 27 August 1752." "Gilbert Frederick born in KEKYT and Katrina Eddwaet born in Nine Partners and living there, were married on 28 September 1754." These Edward sisters were daughters of JAN EDWARDS and MARITIE GONSALES-DUC, whose family was also from the Hussey Hills area, near Kingston, and later went to Nine Partners Patent. That these Fredericks brothers related to my DORCAS FREDERICKS I am fairly certain, but how they related I have not yet determined. I thought at first they might have been her younger brothers, but I have a nagging feeling that DORCAS FREDERICKS might have been born with a different surname, and married first a man named Fredericks, and that these Fredericks brothers were her sons, born in Ulster County, where she then remarried my ancestor Le Meyer Every (no marriage record known), their first known son being a rough contemporary of these Fredericks brothers. On the "January 17, 1717/18 census for Dutchess County North Ward of Inhabitants, Sojourners and Free Holders of Dutchess County" appears "Hans Adam Fredericks". The names Johan/John and Adam were used by descendants of the Fredericks/Edwards marriages, but unfortunately I can find nothing about this "Hans Adam Fredericks". Any help from those with access to Ulster County early source material would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Sharilyn Whitaker

    2. Dorothy, I've been looking at Peter and Catherina Carstang for quite a while. The problem is that the only child I could find for them is Gideon Margison b. 1754, and from the little I could find?Gideon was a loyalist and seems to have moved to Canada before the Revolution, but I could be wrong.?Most of the baptismal sponsors for Peter and Treintje's children were relatives of Treintje,?one exception being Rachel, bap. 27 May 1791, sponsors George Sparling and Sarah (Taatje) Myndertsen. So many people were moving in and out of the area during the war it makes?things difficult. I have also seen Treintje Roosa's name spelled Catrina, so Caty could have been named after her mother. Their first born son was named Benjamin, b.1789, baptismal sponsors Benjamin Roosa and Catharina Reistle. Martinus, b. 1794 was my GGGGrandfather. This conventionally meant that he was born in New York City. I have found a candidate couple to have been his parents and offer them only as a possibility. On 6 Feb 1745 "Pieter Margezin and his wife Catharina Cersting" had their daughter Catharina baptized in the New York City Dutch Church. The witnesses were Gidion Cersting and Catharina Cokkevier, his wife. "Peter Margeson and Catharina Carstang" had been married in the same church on 5 August 1742. They could well have been the parents of the Peter who married Catharina Roosa. It is of further interest that on 1 Mar 1786 "Peter Markison and Treintje Roosa" baptized their oldest child and named her "Caty". 3. Dear Dippy1951, From Peter and Catarina's marriage record at the Katsbaan Dutch Church you will have noted that "Pieter Margerson" is said to have been from New York. This name would be in honor of the paternal grandmother if my theory is correct. 1. [NY-ULSTER] Where is Houghtaling Cemetery-Kingston?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: aggieway Surnames: Rickell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.ulster/3718/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for the grave of John Rickell who died in 1866. The book "Old Gravestones of Ulster County"(1931) lists the place of burial as Houghtaling Cemetery. I got an address for the cemetery from an old city directory of 136 Pine St, but I don't see a cemetery there on current maps and the address today looks like it is a medical office. Can anybody shed any light on this? Also, the city directory showed this as a Protestant cemetery. Any idea what church/churches may have been associated with the cemetery in the 1860's?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
