Hi! Some of you know I have been going nuts trying to find the death of our ggrandfather James W. Lockwood, who died between 1901 and 1920. His father was Wilbur Lockwood (1840-1913). My question is..how do I go about finding an obit or will for Wilbur. My way of thinking is this: If an obit does mentions James, then it narrows my search same with the will. Plus either one may help me find Martha and Mary, James sisters. Thank you..I know this question is probably silly :) Michele R. Reward - $250 To anyone who can provide proof of parentage of Eleazer HORNBECK. Known facts: 1. He, along with wife Annetje "Hannah" Rosekrans, were in Wawarsing, Ulster Co., NY in 1820, 1830 census, and were in Neversink, Sullivan Co., NY in 1840 census. Based on the census records he seems to have been born between 1790-1794. 2. Hannah is the daughter of Moses and Lea Rosekrans of Shawangunk, Ulster County. 3. Eleazer died before April 1849. No will discovered, but in Kingston, NY there is a file in which a claim was made against his very meagre estate by someone Eleazer owed money. Hannah died in Feb. 1864 and is buried in a small rural cemetery in Sundown, Denning, Ulster County. 4. He briefly served in Van Dalfsen's regiment of the war of 1812 (about 3 months in 1814). 4. No land records have been discovered, but his wife and 5 children signed a quit claim deed in May 1849 on a piece of property in Shandaken, Ulster Co. (probably as part of debt against his estate). 5. Children: Jacob b. abt 1817 (m. Sophia Tompkins), Nelly b. abt 1820 (m. John Hinckly), James b. 1823 (m. Lucy), John b. 1830 (m. Mary Jane), Joseph b. 1828 (m. Catherine). 6. Hannah and several of their children joined the Reformed Dutch Church in Grahamsville in 1845. No mention of Eleazer in the church records. Eleazer is mentioned in a few local histories of Neversink and nearby Denning. He is found in "The papers of Reverend J. Milton Haris" on pg 9, and in "historical Sketch of the Reformed Church of Grahamsville" pg 26. In each case the spelling is Eleazer. So who is Eleazer - best guess: There is an Eliza b. 1792 in Rochester, Ulster County, to Petrus Hornbeck and Maria Louw. The location fits well, the time fits well; this Eliza has a grandfather Elisha, thus the name (in various forms) runs in the family; and I find no future record of an Elisa/Eliza as either a male or female. To the first person who can dig up proof of this connection, or another provable connection, contact me and win the reward money. Gary Dufel Feb 20, 1999

Hi Bev, I've had very good luck with the Orange County Genealogical Society. If they can't help you, they can probably direct you to someone who can. They're at 101 Main Street, Goshen, NY, 10924. Steve in Phoenix area
I'm looking for my g grandmother's parents. John Ace Hendrickson and Elizabeth Mansfield. Born cir. 1860. My g grandmother was Ruth Irma Hendrickson and she was born 8/8/1883 and died 8/30/1954. My g grandfather was Norval Eck born 10/30/1878 and died 1943. They lived in WindGap, PA at time of his death. They are both buried in Ellenville in the Fantinekill Cemetery. My gg grandparents on the Eck side are there also. His name was Benjamin, son of John and Caroline Eck of Ulster County, formerly Germany. I know absolutely nothing of the Hendrickson's or Mansfield. If I could find one clue (perhaps the 1880 census which I do not have any access to) or the 1890 census to see if a Ruth as a 7 year old is living with a John & Elizabeth Hendrickson in that county. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Kathy
You may want to try the NYState Department of Health which has archives of birth, death and marriage records from about 1880 on. I just got my gg grandfather's death certificate from 1882 that way. There is a charge; I located the information on the internet. Circleville is not a village or town but just a hamlet. You need to send your request to the Town Clerk in which Circleville is located, namely the Town of Wallkill. Contact information: Jeanne Hillriegel, Town Clerk Town of Wallkill 600 Route 211 East, B0x 398 Middletown, NY 10940 Since Circleville is a different post office, I understand why the letter was returned undeliverable. I also understand your confusion over this. NY is a little tricky in this department. I had an ancestor born in Shin Creek, which is in the Town of Rockland in Sullivan County, though it borders close to Ulster County. When you find information about where someone was born, confirm the township before sending a request. I don't have the web site, but I thought somewhere on the NY GenWeb page there was something to help you get this information. Also, you might want to include the fee clerks charge for this, usually $11, made out to the Town Clerk, Town of Wallkill. Good luck. I tried "Town Clerk's Office" - the letter was returned marked "attempted - not known" and "insufficient address".
