Hi> Looking for any info on Wilbur LOCKWOOD (1840-1913) and wife Elizabeth RULES. They lived mostly in Ulster County NY. (Shandaken area most likely) Elizabeth was born 1848, I have no death date for her. Wilbur is buried in Hudler cemetery but I haven't found Elizabeth there. He served in the civil war 20th regiment Co. D (for NY). They had 3 children that we know of: Martha A. born circa 1868 who probably married Walter VAN KUREN. James W. born 1869 married Nellie M. GRANT in Margaretville, Delaware County, NY. And Mary born circa 1878. Wilbur was a stone cutter (worked in quarries). Anybody know of this family? Esp. interested in Detah date for Elizabeth, and info on Martha and Mary. Thanks! Michele R. Hi everyone. Still looking for a death certificate/date anything for our gretagrandfatehr James W. Lockwood. James was born in Ulster County in 1869 to Wilbur Lockwood and Elizabeth Rules. He was most likely named for Wilburs brother James W. who die din the civil war. In 1900 he is living in Delhi with wife Nellie and children. (Chester, Eva, James W., Sadie J., and Sidney) By 1920 his wife Nellie is listed as a widow and living witht heir youngest child Nellie in Broome County (Town of Sanford). I have searched NY up and down..at least 2x and no success. I am going to recheck with Pennsylvania as this family lived in Wayne County and Susquehanna County for awhile. James was a stone quarryman who lost sight in one eye after an injury. Does he sound familiar to anyone out there? Thanks!! Michele R. It lists cases where the marriage was performed by a JP. But William & Susanna don't appear until their first child comes along. > I can only add that neither was a member of the church. (from Membership Old Dutch Church Kingston 1659-1809 $30) Hmmm. How odd. They had most of the kids baptized there. And I noted that they never had any sponsors or witnesses! Must have been unsociable. :) BTW, it is wonderful what variations the Domines could come up with for Legg! >Here's news - from Olde Ulster Vol II page 235: >At Shout's Court Any idea what that was? The article cites "Court Records" and gives the story. Was it a civil court or some sort of church court? > January 27th 1677, Ah! I have a xerox from a yellowed newspaper. :( There is an extra space between January & 7 - must have been a 2 there. So, the Banns "the following Sunday" could have been in Feb. But still nothing in Hoes. >"Whereas, as Thoomas Mattys and Susan Merritt's banns were being >called - why has she prevented the banns? >ANSWER- That she has changed her mind. >They there in the presence of the court released each other from their >promises. >At the request of themselves William Leecq and Susan Merritt are >permitted to marry and their banns will be called next Sunday" >END Neat! The article tells the story, but not with quotes. Has "(Van Keuren)" after "Thomas Matthy." >THAT is a mention of them and their banns - but not that they were >called in January - best I could do - I hope it helps. Thanks. I plan to type this article into my computer, as it is difficult to read. Might you want to put it on the web page? Or would there be a copyright problem? I don't know what the Old Dutch Post-Star was/is. Gives info on descendants of William & Susanna. With lots of errors in dates, as compared to Hoes. :( I do hope it is correct about one thing - that the Leggs were Scottish. I have been hoping to find some Scots on the tree. <G> Guess my next quest is trying to trace William & Susanna! Btw, I went to a lecture by Hank Jones on Saturday. Nice to meet someone - and in Florida - who knows several of my ancestors better than I do. :) He pinned down my Miller/Mullers for me. The book History of Ulster County, NY on pg. 94 of its second section, town of Marlborough Roman Catholic Church - This denomination was represented in the town at a much later day than any of the others, and for a long time the worshipers of that faith in the town were included among the missionary enterprises of the church. The old Methodist church at Marlborough village subsequently passed into the hands of the Catholics, and is now their regular house of worship at that point. At Milton they have erected a neat frame structure, with parsonage adjoining, and here the priest in charge of both churchs, Father Mee, resides. The parish is now quite prosperous. The book was originally published in the mid to late 1880's I believe. The phone book lists St. James RC at 12 Main St., Milton. Perhaps that would be your best bet. Audrey Klinkenberg
Hi all, My cousin in NY just sent me a copy of a Family Tree column in the Sept 1, 1977 issue of the Old Dutch Post-Star. Says the feature was prepared by the Ulster Co. Genealogical Society. The column is on the "Leg-Legg-Laig-Legge-Legh Family." It says that Susanna Merritt & William Legg had Banns called in the Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston in January 1677. I can't find any trace of banns or marriage in the Hoes book. Anyone know where there is a record of the marriage? And does anyone have information on their origins? JOHN H. KIPP, b 24 Feb 1823 in Rhinebeck moved to Rondout in 1848 when he married CELIA H. POST at the Klyne Esopus Church. He was a boatman, lived on Hasbrouck Street, and died in Rondout, 6 June 1872. Looking for info re this family.
Here's the address for the Town Clerk in Montgomery. Birth, marriage and death records do not start in any New York town before 1880. Town of Montgomery Marie Marano, Town Clerk 110 Bracken Road Montgomery, NY 12549 914/457/2660 You might also consider contacting the villages of Maybrook, Montgomery and Walden, all located in the town (again, no vital records before 1880 -- and possibly later, some of these villages may be less than 100 years old): Village of Maybrook Tina Johnson, Village Clerk 109 Main Street Maybrook, NY 12543 914/427/2717 Village of Montgomery Linda Thompson Village Clerk 133 Clinton Street Montgomery, NY 12549 914/457/9661 Village of Walden Nancy Mitchell, Village Clerk 8 Scofield Street Walden, NY 12586 914/778/2177 Please keep in mind with all of these governments that the quantity and quality of their records will vary considerably. They may not be in a position to do much actual research into their non-vital records (the vital records usually have some form of index and are in better shape). I am seeking the parents/ancestors/family of Merritt DAVIS believed to have been a resident of Ulster County prior to 1840. Merritt died in 1849 in Pawling, Dutchess County, NY. The beneficiary of his will was his brother Jonathan of Pawling. The witnesses to his will were Philip Airs of New Paltz and Silas (?) T. Jordan of Shawangunk, both in Ulster County. Was Merritt Davis a resident of Ulster County and does anyone have information relating to his family? I believe he may be the father of my gggrandmother, Laura Davis Washburn (b.1817). Any assistance would be appreciated. Regards, Bob Peck
I am looking for the name of the Catholic Church in the Marlboro area of Ulster County that was around in the late 1800's and first part of the 1900s. Also was there a cemetery with it? Thanks, Scott
Well, I spelled Ancestry wrong the second time. How humiliating!Click on her site, and then go to the free search section, or try spelling ancestry correctly. I'll go there again and see if it works a second time! Sorry. Beverly
You go to the site she listed: http:/www.ancestry.com/ancestory/search.asp But then, move the page down to "other free databases", go into those at the down arrow--it is the last listing NY wills, click search, then go from there. Beverly I found the site, but no relatives there, alas. kancer@uswest.net Betty E. More wrote: > I would love to see those also if anyone finds them. The census indexes which are on Ancestry now, are a great blessing. I was able to do a search on my surname ELTING/ELTINGE and came up with over 350 records just in State of New York alone. Not only that, but there were Eltings in about 15 other states, so now I have a lot of work ahead of me. I know the page number, city/township and year. One thing I have noticed, is that you have to go back to it often, because it is continually being updated. James W. I have used this site, and they have me on their mailing list so I get frequent postings, but find their stuff very roundabout to go thru. I think one time I did get a fairly good amount of info off their site but usually it's nothing. You can enter in one name, that's it. You can't usually just look around. Just my five cents worth.
