I believe the County Clerk has all Applications for Naturalization filed at the County Court House. -----Original Message----- From: Mary F Hayden [mailto:mary@clark.net] Sent: Saturday, March 27, 1999 8:14 AM To: NYULSTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Ulster County Naturalizations I have checked the regional branch of the National Archives and they cannot find papers for William D. Hayden. The 1875 NY state census said he was already a citizen. Are these records with the Ulster County CLerk? Or perhaps at the NY State archives?? Would welcome any advice on how to proceed. I very much want to find these records. Please email me directly. Thanks, Mary in MD ______________________________
Don't know if this is any connection to your Decker family lines, but the idea that your Grandfather was born in the early 1800's in New York and married a girl from Illinois and settled in Iowa caused flags to appear. My 2nd Great Grand Father was Zachariah Bruyn Decker. He was born 22 Jun 1817 in Shawangunk, Ulster, New York to Cornelius Johannes Decker and Gertrude Bruyn. By the time he was a young man he was located in Western Illinois. Zachariah joined the Mormon Church and was a member of the Mormon Battlion that marched to California at the end of the War with Mexico. He settled in Parowan, Utah and raised a large family with many decendants. The story goes that he left home and family and went West eventually settling in Springfield, Illinois at around 16 years old. While in Illinois he witnessed the Mormon's and their persecutions and joined their cause long before being baptized into the faith so he could accompany the Mormon Battlion. I just wondered if it is concidence that your Decker Grandparent seemed to be in same areas as mine. Good chance there was a connection. I can't locate your Grandfather in my records but he could easily be a cousin. I have a vast amount of information on the ancestry of Zachariah Bruyn Decker if it can be connected to you. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Greetings fellow NYULSTER-L members! I like to occasionally let you know how things are going for our list... MEMBERSHIP STATS As of today, March 28, 1999, we are up to a total of 277 members! There's been a lot of activity as a result, and I hope that many of you are finding some long missing pieces of your family puzzles. THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS One of the reasons this list has been so successful is because of the help of some special people. I would like to extend a special thank you on behalf of the whole list to the handful of Ulster County locals who have been so kind and helpful in offering to do look ups. (I'm afraid to start naming names, because I might leave someone out!) A reminder to those who ask for help: These kind people are volunteers, which means that they love genealogy, but they also have other things going on in their lives. So remember to be as complete as possible when making a request. Give as much information as you know: names, locations and actual or approximate dates; more information will make their search a lot easier. (A name and location only is not very helpful when Ulster County has 300+ years of history) Thank you again to our wonderful helpers! ADDRESS CHANGES A quick reminder to anyone who is going to have an e-mail address change. Please remember to unsubscribe from the list BEFORE your old address is turned off, then resubscribe when the new address is activated. This will save me a lot of time doing manual maintenance (I'm the one getting all the error messages!). Thank you! TEXT FORMAT Another reminder that messages being posted to the list need to be in plain text format. Messages in any other format, such as MIME, are rejected by the server. Depending on your e-mail package, you can probably change this by going to your mail preferences options. SENDING POSTINGS TO THE RIGHT PLACE? If you are saving addresses to your address book, make sure that your postings go only to NYULSTER-L@rootsweb.com. The "other" address, NYULSTER-L-request@rootsweb.com is only for subscribing and unsubscribing. SHARING PUBLISHED INFORMATION When doing genealogy, we all walk a fine line between being helpful and hurting local genealogy societies, or possibly even violating copyright laws. So, some guidelines might help you a bit: 1. Always cite a source you are quoting from. If you know and if it's available, let the person know where they can purchase that resource for their own reference. (Many books we use are a primary source of income for local societies--subsistance income at that!). 2. Do not transcribe whole pages from published works which are still in print/available. Passages are usually fine, as long as you credit the source. However, if you have done your own research, for example, transcribed gravestones at a cemetery yourself, share as your heart leads. I'm so glad to see so many people using our mailing list...we're even getting a steady number of postings from non-subscribers (in which case, make sure your reply goes to the individual, as they will not get an automatic response from the list). All the best for the holidays to you all. Lisa Stitt List Owner NYULSTER-L and VANKEUREN-L LSTITT@warwick.net

If any of the following sounds familar to anyone please contact me. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. 1. Anthony (Antoni) Skabowski b.Poland d. NY married Antonette ? b. Poland d. NY summer of 1957 (family supposedly had a farm somewhere in Upstate NY) Children: Tess, Margie, Estelle, Joseph(Josef,Jozef),Steven(Stephen,Stefen),Ann Jean, Frances(is), and Stanley (my grandfather) I know that Stanley was born 2/3/1903 in Jersey City, NJ. Stanley was a policeman who used to walk the beat according to my father. My father says that all the little children used to call him Uncle Stanley. My grandfather died 6/3/1960 in Brooklyn and is buried at St. John's in Middle Village. Stanley married 11/29/1923 to Florence Louise Bolchon b. 8/15/1904 in Brooklyn,NY d. 3/25/1995 in Millville,NJ. I'm looking for information about any descendants of SQUIRE JUDSON WHITAKER (1855-1923)and EMMA BEERS (1854-1893). They had one son DEWITT WHITAKER (1877-1956). He married ETHEL RANDALL in 1899, and they had one son RANDALL JUDSON WHITAKER (1907-1968). DEWITT was an Erie railroad agent in Nutley, NJ in 1923. RANDALL W. married MARGARET HOFFMAN in 1934. They had two daughters. My mother, SUSAN HILDEGARDE WHITAKER (1904-1994) was the half sister of DEWITT WHITAKER. Her father, SQUIRE JUDSON WHITAKER, and her mother, MATHILDE SNELL married in 1895 in Hancock, NY. Hopefully, Joyce Tanno Hansen -- MZ
Anyone know of Mt Alvernia Cemetery, around Kingston. Not listed in 'Old Gravestones'. Bill S
I'm trying to find information on my grandfathers, JosephIBBETSON and Seeley Cummings CODDINGTON. My grandfather Joseph IBBETSON was born August 19, 1894. He died January 16, 1969. He married Emma Coates and had 2 children, Joseph and Marie. I know that he worked for the railroad and lived in Warwick, NY (orange county). I'm not sure if he worked for the Erie Railroad or the Leigh-Hudson. The only information that I have on my grandfather Seeley Cummings CODDINGTON is that he married Cora Horton after January 1906. He owned a bar in Warwick, NY called Coddingtons. I'm trying to find relatives who can tell me more, but none are living. If anyone knows anything about the IBBETSON'S or CODDINGTON'S, I would appreciate anything that you can tell me. I haven't been able to find anything in the Social Security index or the census. Ibby
Hi Everyone... I am hoping someone can help me. I have been searching for my great grandfather Frances "Frank" Sweet. He was born appx 1860 (give or take a year either way). He married Harriet "Hattie Delong". She was born in Greene County, NY. I found her in the 1880 census, she was 14 yrs old. I found nothing on her until 1910. She was in Watertown, NY listed as the "Wid of Frank" in the city directory. I can find nothing on Frances "Frank" Sweet. I don't even have a clue as to where he was born. I know they had at least 4 children: George L.....my grandfather. Believe it or not I can't find anything on him during his younger years. I get so much conflicting info. His license says he was born in 1889, his son's birth certificate says he was 33 in 1920 which would make his birth year 1887 and the 1920 census says he was 30, which makes his birthyear 1890. This gets so frustrating!!! Isabel....Unknown Edward..Unkown Frances Jr...Unknown. Please....if anyone has any information on this line of Sweets I would apprecaite it if you could contact me at ZYME1997@aol.com. I have come to a dead end with my line of Sweets. Until I can find info on Frances "Frank" Sweet, I cannot link to any of the other Sweets that I see listed in messages. Thanks Sue
I certainly appreciate the warning on Gustave Anjou. I've used his "Ulster County NY Probate Records, Vol. 2" as a reference, and now see that I should try to find original records. One interesting thing - that book had copies of signatures from the documents referred to, including one for Christian Sensabaugh, who was the person I was interested in. It is a rather distinctive signature. In other, primary, sources in Upper Canada, where Christian later moved, the nearly identical signature can be found. So, at least in this one instance, it appears that Gustave may have used real data. Does anyone else independently verified specific records in his Ulster County books?
