    1. ENNIS, John; 1770s-
    2. Susan Seifert
    3. I know this is a long shot, but my ancestor, John ENNIS, was born in NY and moved to Acquackanonk, NJ in the late 1700s. I am not told where he was from in NY., but I did notice quite a few ENNISes in Ulster at that time. His father was probably James ENNIS, and John may have been the youngest out of about 4 or 5 children. Any help will be appreciated. 3. Hi Phoebe & anyone else interested in THOMPSONs. My own THOMPSON line is a brick wall that I've been unable to chip in any manner in the past five years: Samuel THOMPSON, b 18 Sep 1760---per Bible records. ---d 1828 in Otsego Co, NY, had settled there near Decatur prior to 1800. wife: Grizell INGALLS, b 1756, Rehoboth, MA per Bible records ---have been able to trace her line back to immigrant ancestor, Edmund INGALLS of England. They married 1780, in NH---Grizell had family there, having apparently removed to the area after the Rev. War. Have found NO connection between *my* Samuel & the numerous Thompson families of NH in his time. Have found NO evidence of Rev. War service for Samuel. Children, born 1781-1800: Rebecca; Roxanna (my line); Eunice; Hannah; Royal; Ruben/Russel; Caleb; Rufus; Nahum & Samuel, Jr. Any suggestions? Anyone recognize this family? 3. Hello fellow listers: Based on Tom Cornell's recent posting on the ease of looking up Orange Co. Wills and Deeds, I have a couple of questions. I am assuming that Ulster Co. is not the same as Orange Co. Where would one go to find Ulster Co. Wills and Deeds. Anyone know about Dutchess Co.? Next question, is there anyone living in the vicinity of Goshen, or the courthouses in Ulster and Dutchess Co., that could do look-ups? I am living in Washington state, so it is impossible for me to do this myself at this time. I understand that everyone is busy, I just thought I would ask. You know--nothing asked, nothing received. 2. Hello Folks, I just discovered that my James Thompson of Or. Co. NY married Marah McDowell. So have started researching McDowells. Have found a John McDowell from Middle Town, NJ purchased property in Or. Co. NY from Sayers in 1788 and also Alexander McDowell sold property to the Piscataway Baptist ch. in 1731. Is anyone researching McDowell name? I have Runyon and VanCourt ancestors of NJ and Wisner, Thompson, Jayne, Woodhull, and Carpenter of Or. Co., NY. Thank you, Phoebe in CA

    1. Wills and Deeds -- Orange Co.
    2. Thomas Cornell
    3. >From personal experience, I can tell you that there are rather complete records of wills, deeds, etc, for Orange Co., NY going back to the early 1700's. Some of the originals of wills even exist. The wills and related documents -- letters of administration, etc. -- are in the Surrogate Court office. Just inside the front door are fat books which provide an index to their holdings. Once you locate the volume number and page, you head to the basement to find the actual document. These are in similar binders which contain xerox copies of the originals. You will be looking, not at the original will, but a copy made by the court clerk of the original. Other than possible goofs in reading the original handwriting, one is as good as the other. The Surrogate Court office is in a small yellow brick building just east of the Goshen Presbyterian Church which is in the center of the downtown. You cannot miss its tall steeple. Deeds are held by the County Clerk. The Clerk is in the country office complex about two blocks up Main Street from the Presbyterian Church. This is a modern looking group of buildings which I think you might describe as a bunch of stacked blocks. As with the Surrogate, you can go help yourself and find the deeds that interest you. They are all kept by volume and page number. When you find documents you need, then go see one of the clerks to get a copy. Last time I was there, it was quite inexpensive, like 25 cents a sheet. These are all legal documents you will be looking at, so treat them with respect. Make no marks of any kind on them as others after you may want to look at them, too. Tom Cornell Orange Co. 1. Ulster County Records
    2. C Raymond LaFever
    3. There was a request for death records for 1865. New York State did not start recording death certificates until 1880, so town and city clerks will not have any such record. The Surrogate Court is the best bet, if the decedant left any property. The death record in such files is highly unlikely to contain any information on parentage, but a will file can have very useful information on children and maybe siblings (if the decedant died with no children or a sibling might have been named executor, particularly if children were young). Establishing someone as a sibling to your ancestor then finding a death certificate for that sibling (if he/she died after 1880) can be very helpful in establishing parentage. As to the records not being releasable, that just seems strange. They might mean more recent death records, since those that are less than 50 years old do have access restrictions, but from a will in 1865? No, I don't think so. The problem may simply be the poor condition of the records. I would contact the Ulster County Hall of Records. They might be able to give you some better direction as to gaining access to these records. The number is (914) 340-3415. A will file, even without the parentage information, can be invaluable in stringing together clues. 1. Re: ULS county records
    2. While death records may be "unreleasable" The Surrogate's Office also keeps books of Wills. In Orange County I was able to get copies of the wills of ancestors back to the Revolutionary War. Also there are often books of Abstracts of Wills published by Genealogical Societies. The Orange County Genealogical Society, 101 Main St., Goshen, NY 10924 has such a book for Orange Co. and may be able to refer you to the similar for Ulster Co. I have found such documentation generally satisfactory for lineage membership societies such as SAR, OFPA. Frank Sloat Arnold, MD
