I had to say this to those who will appreciate my exasperation. In DECEMBER, I sent to Albany for a copy of my gr gr grandfather's death record (Russell D. KELSEY) . Finally today I received an answer. No record found for Russell D. KEYSEY. You know, it's bad enough waiting 5 months but then to not even get the right name searched. AAAAhhhhhhh. Thank you for letting me vent. Marion

I am wondering if there was a census taken in 1845 and if there was, is there any way to access it? I can't seem to find my ancestors who lived in Ulster County in 1850 or 1855. Even my ancestors from Columbia County seem to be missing from their census records. What is the problem? Did they go into hiding when the census taker came to their door? Or did they go on vacation whenever he came around? Also, does anyone know if there are volunteers that do lookups for Ulster County? Thanks for any and all help. Previously we had been told that her mother's maiden name was Marah McDowell. Does anyone know of a Widow McDowell who married a Mr. Wood?? (I think that is how it might work out if true.) Rachel Ann LEGG VAN KEUREN died at Kingston, Ulster County on 22 October 1893. She died at 62 years and 9 days of age. Therefore was born in October, 1831. She was born, I believe, in Kingston, married Abraham VAN KEUREN, raised their family in Poughkeepsie, but then moved to Pueblo, Colorado. She left Pueblo just before her death to return to her "old home" in Kingston, according to her obituary in the Pueblo Daily Chieftain newspaper. I am searching for her branch of the LEGG family. Does some kindly person, in Ulster County, have ease of access to any Ulster County newspapers for this time frame which might have a more elaborate obituary for Rachel Ann than the Colorado paper. Or, anything else about this family and Rachel Ann, just because it is known. I'd be most appreciative of any directions or clues provided. Regards, Carl Smarling
Hi Julie, Thanks for the info you got from another list. This site should be helpful to many even if it is big. Glad you are on this list! Lenore
Thanks, Cynthia, for that explanation. I knew the village had undergone several name changes, but was unaware of the exact history of it. Thanks again for clarifying. Mary Beth, "Usopus" should have been spelled "Esopus". First documented in 1616 on a map. That's the original name of Kingston in Ulster Co., NY. When the Dutch established the local courts, Esopus was then called "Wildwyck or Wiltwyck" in 1661 by Director General Peter Stuyvesant. The name went back to "Kingston" in Sept 1669 except for a brief time during the second period of Dutch rule, 1673-1674, when it was temporarily called "Swaenenburgh". The neighboring town of Hurley (cross a street and you are there) founded in 1662 was originally called Nieuwe Dorp which means New Village since it was established after Kingston. On 7 June 1663, both Nieuwe Dorp (Hurley) and Esopus (Kingston) were burned by the Indians in what was termed the "Esopus Massacre of 1663." The New Village wasn't substantially rebuilt and resettled until 1669 and shortly after received the name "Hurley". Basically, after 1669 Esopus was called Kingston and Nieuwe Dorp was called Hurley. Once you get the *jist* of it and become familiar with the name changes it becomes easier and less confusing.
