Thank you to one and all. I am very greatful for the information on Otisville. I spent one whole trip to the DC National Archives looking for it and now I know where to look. Wish me luck that this elusive grandfather is there once I find Otisville. Thanks again to all of you. Barbara

Susan, Deyo is a surname--Christian and Pierre Deyo, father and son, were two of the original 12 patentees of the settlement of New Paltz, NY. They signed the patent along with the other 10 men, on 29 Sep 1677. Your Deyo Davis may have been given the name to perpetuate a maternal line surname--a good clue, that you probably have a line going back to those original patentees. Julie, IBSSG Susan Seifert wrote: > My question is this: Could the name Deyo be a shortened name for > Cornelius, or perhaps even a nickname?
I am so excited. I think I may have broken through with the mystery of Deyo Davis. I was looking through the census of Rosendale in 1850 and found a Cornelius Davis married to Sarah Davis and there were about 4 children. I found this same family in the 1855 census of Rosendale, but no Cornelius. There were a couple of children added on also, one of which could be my great great grandmother, Emma Jane DAVIS. There was listed in the 1855 census an Emah who was 2. My Emma Jane should have been 5, but they could have made a mistake. My question is this: Could the name Deyo be a shortened name for Cornelius, or perhaps even a nickname? There is no Deyo DAVIS listed anywhere that I can find. Even the DAVISCLEARINGHOUSE doesn't have his name listed ( except for what I sent in). Any thoughts on this mystery would be greatly appreciated. In the 1850 census of Ulster County in Kingston Town on page 52 ID#NYS9a6748772, there is a Charles C. More. Would anyone know if that census showed names of family members or was that one that just had so many people between the ages of, ect. ? Sure would like to know who was living with him. Thanks, Betty E. More
Now don't get too excited about this. Those are ALL common names! I do not know if I can recreate the deeds or not. There is web site for Ulster and Orange Co and you might want to lurk around there and try to get something stirred up. It is pretty quiet and I have been putting stuff on it trying to get other folks communicating! It is NYULSTER-L@rootsweb.com don forget to put in the word request. I am going to go look under my other e-mail to see if possibly I can find the Thompson stuff. Phoebe
A colleague at the State Archives just sent me this URL from the State Department of Health. It very nicely lays out the access policies concerning birth, death and marriage records in New York State for genealogical purposes. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/consumer/vr/geninst.htm Richard, you might want to create a link to this site on the Ulster County GenWeb page. I can confirm that Otisville is part of the Town of Mount Hope in Orange County (in my job, I have had to deal with officials in the village and it is part of Mount Hope). It is an incorporated village, but for census purposes, look for the Town of Mount Hope first. This in regards to message # 6 about a file to be downloaded of dutch people in Ulster and orange Co. How can i get a hold of this file and the way I can get it on my computer? Still learning! Catherine DVerkijk@aol.com
Hi Barb - I checked my census maps - in the 1840 Census Otisville would have been in Orange Co. It might be under Middletown - the only reasonably sized town in the area. Frank Sloat Arnold MD
Barbera Try ORANGE COUNTY. 1850 Federal Census (M432-574) Otisville should be in Mt Hope Township. It should have been the same in 1855 State Census. I believe that is part of the area that was Ulster County prior to 1800 but then became Ulster County. Bill S
To Mr. "D" and Ray LeFever - What was once called Bloomingdale, is now called Bloomington. There is indeed a Dutch Reformed church located there. I don't know about the baptismal records but here is their address should you wish to contact them. United Reformed Church PO Box 206 Bloomington, NY 12411 The pastor is Rev. Nicholas Miles. Ray...I have a Town of Rosendale Directory for 96-97 and in it is a piece entitled "Commemoration of the 116th Anniversary of the Dutch Reformed Church of Bloomingdale". It was contributed by a Cornelius I. LeFevre and dated September 15, 1912. It gives a short history of the church and the men who were on the first consistory. A Simon LeFevre is also mentioned. I would guess that these are your relatives. M. Oakley, High Falls

I would be interested also in where these records might be. I also would suggest contacting the Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz. Their library had some transcribed church records. I can't remember if this church was one of them, or if even such a church existed. My LeFevre ancestors came from Bloomingdale area. My great grandfather was born in Rosendale. The area is north of New Patlz. Is there anyone who can tell me what town Otisville might have been counted with in the New York Census for the years 1845 and 1855. It is not indexed and neither is it noted on any census. But it was there and had to be counted somewhere. I sure hope that one of you can help me. I am about to order those tapes from the LDS and no use ordering ones that are useless. Barbara
Dear Folks, I see these terms a lot in the old Orange County deeds and books. Does anyone know the history, early settlers, etc. and present location of these areas? I have seen Greycourt associated with the early Cromeline tract and associated with the names Phineas Dun, Joseph Carpenter, and William Morrell, and maybe Anselem Helms. Does anyone have any information on any of the above families (this is 18th century). I have seen Blaggs Clove associated with Woodhull and a John Carpenter and others. Does anyone know which JOHN CARPENTER this might have been and information on his family and descendants. I have seen the name Craigsville associated with Soloman Carpenter, and perhaps, an early JOHN CARPENTER. There were many JOHN CARPENTERs mentioned in the history of ORANGE County and I am trying to sort them out. Any assitance would be appreciated! Phoebe in CA I have seen
