To Get Possession of a Road Asbury Park, NJ, July 3- The old turnpike between this place and the resorts lying on the coast south of here has for many years been in very bad condition. It is owned by the old Deal and Squan Bridge Turnpike Company, though it has long been virtually abandoned by its owners. An information in the nature of a quo waranto has just been filed by the committee of Neptune Township in the name of the State to have the road formally abandoned and its control vested in the Overseer of Roads. The papers were served yesterday on James A. BRADLEY, who is the contolling stockholder. It is understood that no contest will be made, as the turnpike has long since failed to pay. Criminal Carelessness New Haven, July 3- Coroner Eli MIX, who has been investigating the recent accident of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad finds that the accident of was cause by the criminal carelessness of Thomas SHIELDS, a section boss. SHIELDS was in charge of a gang of men repairing the track where the accident occurred. The way train passed the spot in safety, and Coroner MIX thinks SHIELDS laid out too much work to be done before the arrival of the limited express, and is of the opinion that the new rails which were laid after the way train had passed were only partially spiked. SHIELDS could have easily flagged the train. The matter is now in the hands of State Attorney DOOLITTLE. Canal Laborers Must Go Albany, July 3- Supt. of Public Works SHANAHAN has received the data he requested from the canal officials under him, and has come to the conclusion that nearly six hundred of the twelve hundred men employed on the canals will have to be dropped. This is because the law providing $2 a day for laborers makes it impossible to continue the old force with the appropriation he has. He says he has moved carefully in the matter and will discharge the men judiciously. Nancy Pfaff --------------3B7A3DC899D3B656B3B95F2B--

    1. RHODES/WRIGHT/SHELDON, early 1800s
    2. Ashbel RHODES was born 24 May 1811 in NY. Family legend holds that the place was Rochester. This was probably the Rochester in Ulster Co., because the presently large Rochester in the western part of the state was not founded until 1812 and was not named Rochester until 1817 and western NY was also under the jurisdiction of MA. The RHODESes had links with Wethersfield, CT and with the WRIGHT family there. Family legend and documentation indicate that Ashbel's first cousins included John Goodrich, Charles, Mary Anna/Anne, and Abigail WRIGHT. Unfortunately, none married and none had children. The heirs were schools and charities. Their parents were James and Mary Goodrich WRIGHT of Wethersfield, CT. I can trace this line back to England. "History of Ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut mentions a Moses RHODES: "Moses ('the late') m. Sally ________, had (Wethersfield County Records) Beulah; Abigail; Ashbel Wright, baptized 3 September 1820." Was this Ashbel Wright RHODES? The same source indicates that Timothy SHELDON of Hartford (the SHELDONs were also first cousins to Ashbel according to family legend) married Abigail RHODES 13 January 1835. Are the Abigails the same? Apparently, after Ashbel was born in NY the family, again according to family legend, returned to Hartford/Wethersfield, CT. Later, Ashbel, at an unknown time and for unknown reasons, went to NC and GA. I'll appreciate any help in determining Ashbel RHODES's exact birth place, parents, ancestry, and exact relationship to the WRIGHT and SHELDON families. Thanks, Kenyon

I have some old cemeteries that need a lot of cleaning up, The town highway dept. does a good job mowing and trimming, but there are a lot of stones that are either broken or tipped over and they are heavy. They are located in a place that a backhoe or any other heavy piece of equipment can't get to. How can I upright these stones?? Also what type of mortar works best on repairing Marble?? Some stones have so much moss, fungus etc. on them that they are hard to read,I know that rubbing them off is a no no,But I have seen some old stones that have wire wrapped around the top also some with metal pipe straps around the top.Is this an old trick to cause some type of oxidation that cleans them off naturally with rain water?? Because these stones seem to be in nice shape. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. 2. Pamela J. Sears
    3. Hi to all fellow Maul/Moule/Maule descendants: Bob Decker, a descendant of Dewertjen Maul & Andreas Decker, was kind enough to point out to me that the surname is officially, and consistently spelled Maul in "The Palatine Families of New York" by Henry Z. Jones, Jr. So, I must apologize if I have confused any fellow researchers on this point. My ancestress, Leah, used the "Maule" spelling in the Miller Family Bible which chronicles her marriage to Tjerck Van Keuren. Variant spellings of the surname I have found in baptismal records, include but I'm sure are not limited to, the following: Maul/Maule/Moul/Moule/Muyl/Mouwel/Mouw/Maulin/Maunlin/Mool/Mouwlin/Mol. For those of you interested in the bigger picture, there are 2 Maule web sites on line which focus on other "Maule" families. The United Kingdom URL lists Paulus Maul under "known families"...he's #23. http://www.bamaule.freeserve.co.uk/ http://www.cilp.org/~maule/maulehpg.htm Pam Sears

    2. Hi Pam, Because I have Orange Co ancestors too and thought the name sorta sounded familiar I have been watching your communications. I went to the web sites below was what I found with that site! Maybe it is my computer, but thought I would tell you. << http://www.cilp.org/~maule/maulehpg.htm >> The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it. The other website came up beautifully. It is a wonderful site. I checked out the index with as many Or. Co. names as I could think of and threw in a few more just for luck, but found no connections. Thank you for sharing with us. Phoebe I just reread the e-mails and realized the Deckers were involed. Deckers marrried into the Or Co. Carpenter family (not sure how we connect there - maybe a brother or cousin to my Moses Carpenter) and also the Ul Co. John Tack family. I have Carpenters in Or. Co. and Tacks in Philadelphia that I cannot tie in with the Tacks in Ul Co. Ain't it fun?? Phoebe

    1. McCONNELL, Orange County, NY
    2. I hope that someone can help me. In Orange County, Town of Warwick, Philip McCONNELL'S will was probated - Liber F, page 218, 9 May 1818. Those named in his will are sons John Peter (?) (or John and another son, Peter?), Charles, Asa, Aaron and daughters, Keziah, Elizabeth, wife of William CRABTREE, Mary, wife of Mr. McCONNELL, Susan, wife of Benjamin BENNETT and Sarah, deceased wife of a McMURTRY. I am descended from a William CRABTREE (b. about 1784 in Orange County, NY; d. 15 November 1858 in Sussex County, NJ) and wife, Elizabeth ? who was born about 1788 in Orange Co., NY and died in Sussex County, NJ, 22 May 1869. Is this Elizabeth the daughter of Philip McCONNELL? I hope that someone can help me. Does anyone know who the wife of Philip McCONNELL was? His date of birth and marriage? He apparently deid May 1818 in Warwick, Orange, NY. His parentage? I have noticed a Hugh McCONNELL's name mentioned a good many times in Orange County, NY records. Would he be a brother to Philip McCONNELL? Philip McCONNELL was a witness to will of John BLOOM, Warwick, Liber C, p. 311. Asa McCONNELL in 1805 was a witness to the will of George Bucanan, Warwick, Liber C, page 355. Is this Asa, the son of Philip above mentioned? William CRABTREE and wife, Elizabeth (McCONNELL?) had 9 children: John CRABTREE who married Elizabeth GIVEANS, Margaret CRABTREE who married John PUDER; Harriet CRABTREE (Hamit, in her father's will) who married Charles GUNN, Julia CRABTREE who married Jacob DUNNING, Hannah CRABTREE who married Charles ARVIS, Maria (Maud) CRABTREE who married Evi S. TOMPKINS, Jane CRABTREE who married a KAIN - Alexander KAIN?, William CRABTREE, Jr. who married Martha ? and James CRABTREE who married ? I will greatly appreciate any help that anyone can offer. I will be happy to exchange what data I have with others. Mona in Richmond, IN

    1. Maule Family Immigration
    2. Pamela J. Sears
    3. I have recently discovered that the Maule/Moule Family of Kingston, Ulster Co, and eventually Mongomery, Orange, NY were part of the Palatine Families of immigrants to New York (from Germany) in August of 1710. The Maules married into the following Ulster Co families: Van Keuren, Dekker/Decker, Constable, Menges, Huey, Maklin/MacLean, Weller, and Kampfort/Comfort. Christoph Maule & his wife Anna Juliana Zarius/Sargusch, originally located in the Kingston area and removed to Montgomery, while his cousins located in the Red Hook, Catskill and Rhinebeck area. The following is from: "The Palatine Families of New York: A Study of the German Immigrants Who Arrived in Colonial New York in 1710" by Henry Z. Jones, Jr., Universal City, California. 1985. The Maule family originated in Driedorf, Germany. Paulus Maule (progenitor) and Anna Engen had 2 known sons...Johannes Maule and Johann Martin Maule. Johann Martin died in 1697, but his son Johann Friderich & wife Anna Ursula Friess made the journey to New York and were naturalized in Kingston 8 and 9 Sep 1715, and eventually settled in the Red Hook area. Johannes Maule was first married to Anna Juliana Theiss 9 Feb 1687. Anna Juliana was buried 21 Apr 1693, and Johannes married 2nd Elsbeth Drisch 28 Nov 1693. Johannes and Elsbeth from Hohenroth, Driedorf, petitioned to emigrate in 1709, and traveled to the New World with the Philip Sargusch family, arriving NYC in Aug of 1710. Christoph Maule, son of Johannes & Anna Juliana, the immigrant ancestor of the Kingston/Montgomery branch of the family, was baptized "as a child" 15 Jan 1688 in Driedorf, Germany. He married Anna Juliana Sargusch, dau of Phillip & Maria Elizabeth (Andreas) Sargusch, probably on the voyage to the New World. The rest of the Sargusch family returned to Holland on the ship 'John'. Christoffel Maule was naturalized 8 & 9 Sep 1715 in Kingston, along with his cousin Johann Friderich. 1. Chistoffill Moull was in the company of Capt. Wittaker in the regiment of Jacob Rutsen in Ulster Co. in 1715 (Report of the State Historian, Vol. I, p 557). 2. Christoph Maul with wife and ch. was at Heessberg ca. 1716/17 (Simmendinger Register) 3. Chirstoffel Moul was taxed £3 in 1718/19 and £5 in 1720/21 in Kingston (Ulster Co tax lists) 4. The Kingston Court Records show a reference to him in Book I, Part C, pp 29 & 30. 5. Stuffel Moll was in the Company of the Wall-a-kill in the Ulster Co. Militia in 1738 (Report of the State Historian, Vol. I, p 608) 6. He and Anna Juliana were alive as late as 1751 when they sp. at Montgomery Ref. Church. Children of Christoph and Anna Juliana were: i. Dewertjen, bpt 7 Sep 1712 - sp. Gysbert Van Den Berg & Diewertjen Masten (Hoes #2068). She mrd Andreas Decker 12 Apr 1730 at Kingston DRC. ii. LOUIS The Brooklyns beat the Browns today in a stubbornly contested game. The Brooklyns were outbatted, but King [the pitcher for St. Louis] was compelled to split the centre of the plate with every ball pitched, so severe was Gaffney [the umpire] for his partiality. The spectators roundl= y hissed Gaffnew for his partiality. The game was characterized by brillian= t fielding, in which Corkhill, Fuller, Smith and Robinson did great work. DR ALLEN L. THOMPSON: the late Clara L. Thompson Cook was his dau. The late Dr Allan R. Thompson of Troy was his son. The youngest dau. of Dr Allan L. Thompson, Minnie Thompson still resides in Troy. A descendant of Dr. Thompson's is H. Paul Thompson also of Troy. GEORGE THOMPSON, lived on the present Mullen farm. He was the uncle of Alvin Thompson & the grandfather of George Eely wwho is his namesake. Other descendants of George Thompson make their home in Washington Co.. SAMUEL THOMPSON was the father of Alvin Thompson. His home was the farm north of the village now owned by James Johnson & this was the birthplace & home of Alvin Thompson for 75 yrs. It is interesting to note that the home has been the birthplace of 3 generations of the Thompson family. It was the birthplace of Alice Thompson Bacon, dau. of Alvin Thompson & of his great-grand son (Samuel's) Ralph Bacon James Thompson (p-2 Jan issue T.F.M.) sailed ten yrs on the lakes & then built a blacksmith shop & lived in a little house just east of the shop. James Thompson went west a few yrs later & entered the drug business. His wife was the sister of Admatha Hadley. James Thompson was the son of John & Margaret Thompson who came here from Washington Co. in 1816 & settled north of Sandy Creek. John & Margaret Thompson family could boast of nine children: Robert; Samuel; James; George; David; William; Nancy; Polly; & Sally. (Not the same man as Dr James Thompson also given on page 2, Jan issue T.F.M.) John Thompson (by Alvin Thompson) - Quite interested in Sketches, I have been asked to tell more about Washingtonville. Well, think I will commence before that was here. My grandfather John Thompson, came here from Washington Co. in 1816, with his family of children (mostly boys & girls). He settled on a farm now owned by George Knollin. He lived in the first house he erected for two winters without doors or windows, hanging up blankets at the openings. In 1838 my father bought the place where he lived & died & where I was born & lived over 75 yrs. My daughter & grandson were born in the same house & within the same month that I was. My uncle George Thompson married Maria Smith, half sister of George & John Smith. Capt. James Thompson sailed on Lake Ontario ten yrs. He built the block on Railroad Street facing East First St. where the meat market & hardware store is now. Three other boys went west. I learned to spell in the old brick school house DR JAMES THOMPSON, additional imformation: The family of Dr. James Thompson included Allen Thompson; William Thompson, who left no decendants; James Thompson, who left no descendants; Jesse Thomp- son, who became a dentist & had a family; Catherine, who was b-June 8, 1819 & was married to Martin Gillett; Maria who married >> --part1_40889227.24748544_boundary--

    1. TERWILLIGERs in Ellenville
    2. Looking for information on Martin Terwilliger b: 1795 married Margaret Terwilliger. They lived in Ulster County NY. Up thru 1818 their children were baptised in the Wawarsing Reformed Dutch Church. After that date I can't find them. They were still in the same area according to the census records until 1840 (I can't find Martin in the 1840 NY census). They lived in Ellenville. They did have more children after 1818. I am wondering if Martin and Margaret switched to the church in Ellenville because it was closer. Ellenville has an RDC. I don't know when it was started. I also don't know where Martin and Margaret are buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think my ancestor is one of their children born after 1818 (1824 to be exact). According to census records they did have more children, one who fits my ancestor's age range. FYI my ancestor was Elihue Sheldon Terwilliger born 3/2/1824 in Ellenville. Thanks. Sharlene
