>>Anyone familiar with a Montrepose Cemetery in Kingston ? I'm also interested in Montrepose. I've been there for a one hour visit looking for several Stephan's and von Becks who should be there. It's a very large cemetery. Anybody know of Montrepose Files? 'Old Gravestones' is a book published by the Ulster County Genealogical Society, 1931, by Poucher and Terwilliger listing Ulster Gravestone Inscriptions, (18000 I believe). It is available from Hope Farm Books (sponsor of this site). Bill Staples
I have a copy. It's indexed by Town and the cemeteries in that Town. I'll do look ups if you have the Town. After reading a post by Bill Staples concerning Ulster cemeteries, I have this question. What is 'Old Gravestones of Ulster County' ? I have many ancestors buried in Ulster Co, and would like to know in which cemeteries they are buried. Many thanks for your help. Barbara J. Pulley
Anyone familiar with a Montrepose Cemetery in Kingston ? I received a clue that some ancestors are buried there. I wrote to the cemetery and received a reply that they have only chronological listings (no surname lists). They also indicated that there are 'many' Staples buried there. The cemetery does not appear to be included in 'Old Gravestones of Ulster County', why I do not know. I guess a trip to Kingston and another walking cemetery tour will be necessary. Does anyone know of any transcribing done in this cemetery ? Bill Staples
Thank you to everyone who responded to my post about the town name I can't read --- It is probably Wilber -----Appreciate everyone who took the time to help -------Thanks Hope Florida _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. How about Milton. It is not a 'Township' , just a community in Marlboro. Bill S
Hi Abbey, The place was likely "Wilbur", which merged with the villages of Rondout and Kingston to form the City of Kingston, I think in the 1870's. Hi, Does anyone know of someone who takes cemtery photos in Ulster County for those of us researching from other states? I have several ancestors buried in the Ellenville Cemetery. The surnames are SHERWOOD and TERWILLIGER. Thanks, Sharlene
I have a Jonah Rhodes b 1824 NY md to Eliza Ann Palmatier, they lived in Ulster Co, jonah said to be son of Jonah and Abbey J Rhodes Jackie
Josiah Rhodes is listed in the 1810 Census for Ulster County. "History of Ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut" also mentions a Josiah Rhodes. These may be the same person and possibly the father of my ancestor Ashbel Rhodes who was born 24 May 1811 in Rochester. Ashbel (Wright?) Rhodes had connections with both Rochester and Wethersfield, and with the Wright Family in the latter. I'll appreciate any help. Thanks, Kenyon

As a Putnam County resident and an Ulster and Delaware family researcher, I read with interest your recent postings on Beverly Robinson (1722 Middlesex, VA - 1792 Thornbury, England) and his families' land dealings. Since he originally owned most of Putnam County through his marriage to Susanna Phillipse, there is a historical marker marking his house where Arnold took refuge after his treason was discovered and there are still families bearing this name throughout the county. Your information ended however with the confiscation of his properties and dismissal to England. However, there is an interesting historical note to this history. According to French's history of Putnam County, "It was subsequently shown in court that one-third of the patent" (Philipse Patent granted 1697 to ADOLPH PHILIPSE and inherited upon his death by nephew FREDERICK PHILIPSE and his children, PHILIP, MARY and SUSANNA ) "was vested in the children of Colonel Morris and his wife," (Mary) "and was not reached by the bill of attainder. The State was therefore obliged to protect the purchasers by settling the clams of these children." French goes on to state in footnotes that "In 1809, John Jacob Astor bought the interest of the heirs or Morris for this property for f20,000" and brought suit against the State. "The State to protect those who held title from the Commissioners of Forfeiture, passed a law, April 16, 1827, directing 5 suits to be prosecuted to judgment in the Circuit Court of New York for review and final decision. If against the defendants, the State agreed to pay $450,000 in 5 per cent stock, redeemable at pleasure; and if the decision included improvements that had been made by occupants, $250,000 more. Three suits were tried, each resulting in favor of Astor; upon which the comptroller was, by act of April 5, 1832, directed to issue stock for the full amount, with costs. The amount issued was $561,500. Few suits have been tried in the State involving larger interests to greater numbers, or which were argued with more ability, than this." I do not know if the SUSANNA PHILIPSE ROBINSON's heirs were also affected by this suit which was brought about by a prenuptial agreement between her sister and the Morris family. I do, however, know that my EIGNOR ancestors purchased land on the Ulster/Delaware border in 1833 from a BEVERLY ROBINSON and FRANCIS his wife of New York City. Would someone be so kind to look up census or any information on Edmund or Edmond P (possibly PATEL) DEYO. He was born in 1859 in Ulster Co., New York, but moved to Knox Co., Illinois where he married in 1880. I found Edumd listed in the 1900 Census where he was located in Stark County Illinois and listed New York as his place of birth along with his mother and father. Edmund and Asa M Deyo purhased approximately 1300 acres of farm land in Texas in 1903. Asa was christened on 28, Aug 1857 in the New Paltx, Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, Ulster Co., New York. I don't believe Asa and Edmund are brothers, but they could be cousins. Does anyone have access to the extensive Deyo Genealogy?? I would appreciate any help. Thanks Dan Tavener Thanks
Susan, Very interesting. And we should all be very careful when we pull those levers on those first Tuesdays in November. Do we have anyone who could come close to filling their shoes? Regards, Roberta Meehan antrob@worldnet.att.net

Hi, I'm new to the list and thought I'd see if anyone is researching the family of Warren TOBIAS. According to federal census records, he is listed as being in New Paltz in 1800, 1810, & 1820; and in Shawangunk in 1840. (I found him in Tompkins Co in 1830). His two older children were sons, Moses and Alfred. I believe his wife was Jane HORNBECK who is listed as buried in Ascension Church Cemetery in Esopus. If you have any connection or information on these names, I'd love to hear from you. Mary Saggio Cedarburg, WI
