Hi! I would like to know too if there is a cemetery listing for Ulster Co. I had the same experience with the familytreemaker.com site (different family). If anyone knows, can you reply to the list. Thanks. Sue _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com
There was a question from Michelle about writing to the Town Clerk of Woodstock to get several death records. Of course you can write to seek the information, but a general request will be difficult to fill and the clerk might say no. You really can't argue because of the time it would take to browse these records. When you have a date, or even just a year, it speeds up the process considerably. The clerk may have these records indexed, but that is no guarantee. Keep in mind that the clerk has the right to charge you $11 per name, whether or not a certicate is found. Some clerks will be less demanding in the fees they charge, but the law allows them the $11. What I would do is write a note to the clerk explaining that you have several names you are seeking but that you aren't sure they will necessarily show up and that you don't have specific dates. Ask what will be charged to search these records. The clerk may be able to help, but she also may say no due to time constraints. I'll stay off my soapbox, but don't forget that most town clerks wear many hats and are overworked and underpaid. You should, particularly with a SASE, at least expect a response. And remember, no death records will show up before 1880. Hello, I went to familytreemaker.org and entered Meehan. The first item on the results list was an index of Ulster county cemeteries with the name Meehan. When I clicked on the link, I got an error message about access to the server. My question: is there an index of Ulster County cemeteries, including surnames, on the web? Or on the Hope Farm website? Thank you Roberta
Can someone tell me the best way to obtain obituaries for Ulster Co.? Can it be done by mail? Also, how far does the "Daily Freeman" go back? Did it have a predessor? Thanks. The Orange County Genealogical Society has a very good collection of books, including some from Ulster County. It's located in the 1841 Courthouse in Goshen. Check their Web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~nozell/ocgs/ for operating hours. I'll be up there myself over Labor Day. Happy Hunting! Sue Dewey Round Rock, Texas
Hi..as many of you know I have had a frustrating time tracing our ancestry. After close to 5 years of genealogy, I have very, very little. Last night I was thinking about a 1900 census in Woodstock where it lists our gggrandmother as having 11 children but only 7 living by this time. Well one of her children we knew about as he died in the civil war. Would it be acceptable to write to the woodstock town clerk and ask (use an sase and all) if she has a record of any of her childrens deaths? I know parents names and only 10 of their children. I have tracked this family from the 1850 census to the 1900 census, minus 1890 of course and they stay in Woodstock mainly. I have never asked for something so general but am anxious to find more about our family. Thanks all of you! Michele R. Hope to be planning a research trip to Ulster Co. What recommendations do any of you have for places to start? Does the library in Kingston have a good genealogical section? Are there genealogical/historical societies to visit? We are looking primarily in the Marbletown area. Any suggestions welcomed! (Need to check their hours - limited!) # 2 stop - Goshen Public Libe - If you are looking for someone particular - and OCGS doesn't have it a quick stop at the Goshen libe may find a clue. (Don't be put off by the location - their parking lot is near the building - and they can escort you out after dark - but be wary of the lower end of Newburgh main street - keep car doors locked) Forget Albany! Kingston Public Libe is decent. Ulster Co Hist Society limited. The Orange Cty Surrogate is only if you have specific wills that you want copies of. Not a fishing expedition place. Marilyn Stern asked about pension records from the 30s and 40s. I'm not sure where she might find something. I would guess that the pension would have come from the county. Contact the Ulster County Hall of Records at (914) 340-3415 to see what kind of social service records might still exist. I'll warn you, your chances of finding such records will not be good. Social service records from this time period are pretty sparce. There was no incentive to keep these for the long term. A call to the Ulster County Social Services Department would also be a good idea, particularly if the Hall of Records is not able to help you. I can't locate a phone number, but the office would be in Kingston in the 914 area code. One final note, I commend Marilyn for doing her homework before heading north. I can't stress enough how important this can be. It will save you a lot of disappointment and the repositories some stress when they have to tell you they don't have what you need. Good luck. Hi Ulster List-- Here's a variation of a question I've not seen asked before: My grandfather, Fred H. Hough, lived in the Town of Marbletown, Ulster Co., (Kripplebush, actually) from the early 1930s until his death in 1947, at age 69. He had gone almost completely blind by the time he moved there and received what my dad calls a "blind pension". It was $16 per month and it was disbursed monthly. My dad thinks it was generated from either Ulster County or the Town of Marbletown. What I am looking for is some type of application or recordkeeping that would have my grandfather's full name, hopefully including a middle name, on it; we are trying to determine if his middle name was "Hunt" or some other name. (I have his death record and it has only a middle initial, not a middle name.) Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'll be up in the Ulster Co. area at the end of the summer but I wanted to get a head start on this one, if possible! I appreciate you taking the time to read this-- Regards to you from a hot and dry Austin, TX, Marilyn Hough Stern

Dear fellow listers-- I have a question that I hope some of you might be able to answer. Does anyone know of books, websites, etc., where I might be able to learn more about the Ulster & Orange Co. Home Guard of 1763, specifically, the militia company commanded by James Clinton. I'm also curious about militia companies in Ulster and Orange counties during the Revolution. Any ideas? --Debbie (dlcowman@juno.com) Researching Allison, Babcock, Belknap, Carman, Cowman, Dodd, Gould, Litch, Millican, McNeil, Sweet, Veatch
I have just made a wonderful connection that took my STAGE line back several generations (3 generations listed below). It appears possible/probable that my "Davit STAGE" (as it appeared on the marriage record in Wawarsing, NY) could have been David STAGG, son of Cornelis STAGG and Margrietje BANTA of Bergen, N.J. Since all of this is quite new to me, I've started surfing the web trying to locate clues and direction for a further search. Would appreciate any suggestions of sources I might research to either confirm or eliminate this possible connection? Any suggestions for directions or links for further research would be very much appreciated.
